Jets Looking To ‘Establish Bully Mentality’ In New Era

The New York Jets unveiled their all new locker room today as the new team reported for training camp Tuesday morning. The theme for Gang Green is all new.

“New digs, new coach, new quarterback, new everything. Detect a trend?” wrote ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “Now all they have to do is … you know, win games.”

On the long list of things the Jets organization drastically needs to improve upon, the offense sits at the top. They have brought in a new quarterback and a new offensive coordinator (again) in an attempt to finally create a formidable offense at MetLife Stadium, and reporter Rich Cimini says offensive improvement is the single biggest storyline ahead of the Jets 2025 campaign.

“Can the Jets break their streak of nine straight seasons as a bottom-10 offense in scoring?” Cimini asks. “Obviously, Aaron Rodgers and his handpicked coordinator, Nathaniel Hackett, weren’t the answers. Now the Jets turn their hopeful eyes to QB Justin Fields and first-time offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand.”

Cimini also writes that he believes this iteration of the Jets offense starts and ends on the ground. The offensive line is chalk full of first rounders, the quarterback has better legs than most, and as far as the running back room goes, it is considered one of the leagues best.

“The plan is to feature the running game, which will include running back Breece Hall and an offensive line loaded with high draft picks,” Cimini concludes. “New coach Aaron Glenn wants to establish a bully mentality. It’s been a long time since the Jets scared anybody with their offense.”

Is Justin Fields The Bridge Or The Foundation

I’m not here to write a “bad news” article about the New York Jets because, to be completely honest with you, I think they’re actually going to be pretty good. However, given the fact that the Jets have employed nine starting quarterbacks in three years, many Jets fans are wondering whether or not Justin Fields has joined the crew as a building block or a place holder.

“Is Fields the long-term answer or just the latest quarterback passing through?” Rich Cimini asks in his season preview. “The Jets are paying a hefty price ($30 million guaranteed) to find out. If it’s the latter, they can cut bait after a year and dive into the quarterback-rich 2026 draft.”

Why Fields Can Succeed

Fields has all the tools to be a successful quarterback in the National Football League. Athleticism-wise, he is in the 99th percentile. He runs a 4.4 flat forty yard dash and has a bazooka for an arm.

Upstairs, his four years of NFL experience should have provided enough exposure to big league ball to make Fields a bonafide veteran. Still, at only 26-years-old, Fields has a lot of growing to do.

He has never thrown for more than 2,600 yards in a single season, though his 1,100 in six starts last season was the best he’s looked yet. The knock on him is that he has a tendency to hold the football too long and that often impacts his decision making. Should the Jets be able to implement his skill set into a run first, heavy play action attack, he should be able to look like the promising first round pick he once was.

For this reason, I am sipping all the Justin Fields Kool-Aid until further notice.
