Training camp has officially begun for the New York Jets.
On Saturday, July 19, the team announced its first moves as rookies reported for the first day of activity.
The Jets announced that they have placed pass rusher Jermaine Johnson and wide receiver Irvin Charles on the “Active/PUP list.”

“Smith received an NFI designation due to an illness or injury he sustained outside NFL game or practice,” Jets senior reporter Eric Allen revealed.
“Players who suffer injuries outside of football or have a long-term illness are placed on the non-football injury/illness list. Rookies who are still recovering from injuries suffered in college are often placed on the active/NFI list to start the season,” ESPN’s Keith Jenkins explained.
“Players who remain on the NFI list after the roster is set at 53 at the end of camp can be placed on the reserve/NFI list and will miss at least four games. They don’t count against the 53-man active roster limit,” Jenkins added.
What Does It All Mean for the Jets?
Johnson, 26, is recovering from a torn Achilles he suffered during the Week 2 matchup versus the Tennessee Titans last season on Sunday, September 15.
Charles, 28, is recovering from a torn ACL from the Week 14 matchup against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, December 8 2024.
“While on Active/PUP, Johnson and Charles will be permitted to attend meetings and use the team facilities. Not allowed to practice with this designation, they can be activated at any point once they are cleared,” Jets senior reporter Eric Allen explained.
Shortly after the news went public, Johnson broke his silence on the subject matter on Saturday, July 19.
“I will be on PUP because the team wants to move slow to be safe, which I agree with. Not because I’m not ready. All is well,” Johnson explained on X previously Twitter.
