The New York Jets are going to be without wide receiver Garrett Wilson for the foreseeable future.
Hours ahead of their Week 11 contest against the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football, the team announced that Wilson was being placed on injured reserve.
That means the former Ohio State product will miss at least the next four games.
Jets Still Have a Roster Spot to Play With for the Future
Wilson being placed on IR opens up a spot on the Jets’ 53-man roster. The team also announced that defensive back Jarius Monroe has been elevated for the Pats game on Thursday, November 13.
That decision to elevate Monroe is a temporary roster move. He will revert to the team’s practice squad on Friday, November 14.
“Monroe (6-2, 205), who was added to the practice squad on Nov. 5, initially signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Tulane in May 2024. He spent most of the 2024 season on the Green & White’s practice squad and was elevated for three games before he was signed to the active roster ahead of Week 17. Monroe, who began his college career at Nicholls, played 17 defensive snaps and 58 special teams snaps for the Green & White across 5 game appearances last season. He then spent this summer with the Jets before he was waived with an injury settlement in August,” Jets senior reporter Eric Allen wrote in a press release.
That means the Jets will still have a spot to fill on the 53-man roster during Wilson’s absence.
Evaluating the Games That Wilson Is Set to Miss
The Jets’ placement of Wilson on IR ahead of Week 11 means that this Patriots game on Thursday, November 13, will count toward one of the automatically missed four contests.
However, this doesn’t necessarily mean those will be the only missed games for Wilson. ESPN’s Rich Cimini revealed that the former Ohio State product was expected to be out for between three and four games with his knee sprain.
The other three games Wilson will miss include the Week 12 road trip to play the Baltimore Ravens. He will also be unavailable for the back-to-back home games against the Atlanta Falcons (Week 13) and the Miami Dolphins (Week 14).
Wilson will be first eligible to return for the Week 15 road game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Fair to Wonder if Wilson Will Suit up Again for the Jets This Season
The Jets enter Week 11 with a 2-7 record. Who knows what their record will look like in a month? When Wilson is eligible to return, there will only be four games remaining in the Jets’ 2025 regular season.
Would the Jets risk Wilson’s long-term health for what could be several meaningless games? The Jets could realistically be mathematically eliminated from postseason contention by the time Wilson returns.
Instead, the Jets might be better served playing things safe with Wilson while simultaneously getting a serious look at the young receivers on the team.
That group includes John Metchie III, Adonai Mitchell, and Arian Smith. The Jets need to figure out if any of them are capable of being serious contributors to the wide receiver room moving forward.
