The New York Jets are expected to get back some much-needed reinforcements.
Starting defensive end Jermaine Johnson, who has missed the last three weeks, could return to the lineup in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos in London.
“I think there is a really good chance he will be out there. I really do,” head coach Aaron Glenn explained on Wednesday, October 8. Johnson has been battling a calf injury.
NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY was the first to share over the weekend that Johnson was expected to return to the starting lineup in Week 6.
One Last Hurdle Remains for Johnson to Be Cleared for Takeoff
ESPN’s Rich Cimini explained that Johnson’s “key day” will be on Thursday, October 9.
“If he gets through tomorrow with no setbacks, he should be good,” Cimini said on social media.
“Tomorrow will be a big day. Well, today is going to be a big day, but tomorrow is going to be a big day as far as him being on the field and being able to get the reps that he needs to go out there and play confidently. I’m looking forward to seeing how he operates today going into tomorrow,” Coach Glenn said.
Johnson’s Impact Will Be Felt on and off the Field
The former Florida State product has been a dynamic presence on the gridiron.
He has appeared in 35 games and has made 21 starts. Johnson has collected 10 sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and 21 quarterback hits.
The Jets desperately need help at defensive end, and he would provide a solution. However, his impact goes far beyond the football field.
Johnson is built differently. He has an elite mentality that is infectious to his teammates. Johnson has a desire to be great and demands that of his teammates.
The Jets are floundering at 0-5, and not a single player has stepped up and rallied the troops. Johnson could be the antidote to help turn things around both on and off the field.
Jets Won’t Be Operating at Full Power
While the Jets are likely to get Johnson back, it wasn’t all good news on the injury front.
Starting slot corner Michael Carter II and veteran wideout Allen Lazard “did not travel with the team to London,” the Jets posted on social media.
Coach Glenn said on Wednesday, October 8, that Carter is still going through the NFL’s concussion protocol.
“There is a good chance that he will be out this week,” Coach Glenn said.
Lazard didn’t make the trip and won’t play in the game due to a “personal” situation, Glenn said.
Jets Likely Going to One of the Young Bucks on Offense
Lazard being ruled out leaves the Jets dangerously thin at wide receiver.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini said the team is down to four wide receivers on the 53-man roster: Garrett Wilson, Josh Reynolds, Arian Smith, and Tyler Johnson.
“Have to figure they promote one from the PS [practice squad] — Isaiah Williams, [Jamaal] Pritchett, [Quentin] Skinner, or Brandon Smith,” Cimini said.
The Jets need another pass catcher to step up to the plate.
