Jets Receive Massive Great News Ahead of Week 2 Bills Contest

The New York Jets received some surprisingly good news ahead of the Week 2 matchup with the Buffalo Bills.

Bills star defensive tackle Ed Oliver was added to the injury report on Thursday with an ankle issue, per ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. “Oliver was spotted in a walking boot,” Schefter added.

“Did not participate in Thursday’s walkthrough. He did practice yesterday [Wednesday], so this injury happened sometime between yesterday’s practice and today’s walkthrough. He was in a boot, and he was using a scooter to get around. The Bills have one more practice this week before they get ready for the Jets this upcoming Sunday,” WKBW sports director Matthew Bové explained on social media.

Ed Oliver Was a Game Wrecker in the Bills’ Season Opener

Kevin Massare of Bills Roundtable emphatically said Ed Oliver was “the best defender in football in Week 1.”

You can certainly make a strong case.

Oliver finished the Week 1 game against the Baltimore Ravens with six solo tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, and a key forced fumble.

The Ravens led 40-32 with 3:10 remaining in the fourth quarter. Star running back Derrick Henry took the handoff and was met by Oliver, who stripped the ball, creating a turnover and an opportunity.

Buffalo recovered and four plays later scored a touchdown. The momentum of the game had flipped. Eventually, the Bills would go on to beat Baltimore with a last-second game-winning field goal, 41-40.

Jets Should Be Licking Their Chops Ahead of This Game

Buffalo is a scary team.

They have the reigning MVP at quarterback, they’re 1-0 on the season after beating Baltimore, and they have won the division five straight years.

“You see! He is not a machine. He is a man,” Tony “Duke” Evers once proclaimed in the 1985 movie “Rocky IV.”

Buffalo showed flaws in their Week 1 win over Baltimore.

They gave up 238 rushing yards, three touchdowns, and 8.2 rushing yards per carry. That was with Oliver; imagine how much worse it could look without him.

The Jets in Week 1 were a dominant rushing outfit. They finished the season opener with 182 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, and averaged 4.7 rushing yards per carry.

Gang Green’s identity is running the football. Buffalo’s weakness is stopping the run. This is a golden opportunity for the green and white to play to their strengths, which coincidentally is also the opponent’s weakness.

For what it’s worth, Bills sideline reporter Sal Capaccio told me on “Boy Green Daily” that Buffalo’s defensive issues are correctable.

“Well, I think everything is correctable, but I think it all has to come together,” Capaccio told me. “These are not excuses; these are things that I think are reasons. The Bills’ starters didn’t play a lot in the preseason together; they didn’t get those reps. There was a lot of miscommunication, and some guys were out with injuries. They were already a tick behind in some respects. Especially at the safety spot, Cole Bishop and Taylor Rapp didn’t get as much time on task together.

The Ravens give them credit man, they did a great job of getting up to the line of scrimmage, not letting the Bills identify, quick snap, and making sure the Bills’ communication wasn’t quite there yet before they saw what was happening. Then the execution wasn’t there.

The correctable part is [that] you have to be able to tackle better, especially in the front seven. You have to be able to close down gaps better.

The other part, and this is no disrespect to the Jets, because they have an excellent running game, but holy cow, they played the Baltimore Ravens, who have Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson. I think that is a test for anyone in this league. Obviously, the Jets are going to be a really big test again this week with Breece Hall and Justin Fields, but I think all of those things coming together, I think that’s correctable, but you’re going to have to go out there and prove it and do it,” Capaccio told me.
