If the New York Jets are going to pull the trigger, it’ll have to be a seismic package.
That is the message that the Jets have shared to NFL teams inquiring about the availability of superstar defensive tackle Quinnen Williams ahead of the Tuesday, November 4, NFL trade deadline.
“Keep an eye on the Jets; teams have been showing interest in DT Quinnen Williams, although New York’s asking price is massive,” NFL Insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic revealed on Saturday, October 25.
A Pivot Point Is Rapidly Approaching for the Jets
Williams, 27, has two and a half years remaining on his $96 million contract. However, there is only $5 million in guaranteed money left on the deal.
“The Jets have rebuffed his desires to have his contract restructured and adjusted, and more guaranteed money added. So if he is going to be traded, it is because Quinnen wants out and the guaranteed money isn’t necessarily there,” NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY revealed on “Jets Final Drive.”
Williams wants more money. The Jets haven’t been willing to pay up yet. That creates a massive storyline this offseason as rubber is set to meet road.
The Jets have two choices. They can pay him and allow him to be the flag bearer for this regime. Or they can trade him to the highest bidder to help accelerate this current rebuild.
“I thought the same thing: first round pick plus, a one and a three or a one and a four. I was told by somebody very tied into this situation that the Jets are probably looking at a two for him. The reasoning for that is there is no real, substantial, guaranteed money left on his deal after this year. Teams know — there are rumblings around there that Quinnen Williams is currently unhappy. That is the perception outside of Florham Park. We haven’t talked to Quinnen to ask him if he’s unhappy. He would 100% not tell the media the truth if he were unhappy or not,” Hughes explained.
Trading Williams Would Have a Lot of Ripple Effects in New York
This is a huge decision.
Williams is arguably the Jets’ best player. He is their second-longest tenured player on the team. The former Alabama product was one of six team captains voted on before the season.
That kind of player only comes around so often. If the Jets are offered a historic Herschel Walker package, then they must consider it.
However, if the package doesn’t include a future first-round draft choice, then the Jets should hang up the phone.
You only consider trading your best player for what Russini described as a “massive” price point. A second-round pick certainly doesn’t meet that criteria.
Regardless of the offers the Jets receive or have received, they have to consider the other side of the coin strongly. There is merit in keeping Williams, a 27-year-old, former first-team All-Pro.
Head coach Aaron Glenn is trying to win games. Williams being on the roster will help those endeavors in 2025 and beyond.
