Jets Sign Former 49ers Draft Pick in First Move Before Dolphins Game

The New York Jets are adding some reinforcements on the backend of their defense ahead of the Week 14 matchup with the Miami Dolphins.

NFL Insider Aaron Wilson shared on social media that the green and white is signing defensive back Samuel Womack to the practice squad.

Womack’s agency, JL Sports, confirmed the news on social media, “Congratulations to client Sam Womack on signing with the @nyjets Practice Squad.”

A corresponding roster move was not announced.

Jets Kicking the Tires on a Young Player With Upside

Womack, 26, entered the league as the No. 172 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft.

He spent the first two seasons of his career with the San Francisco 49ers. That was highlighted by a trip to the Super Bowl on February 11, 2024. San Francisco lost 25-22 to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime.

Womack was waived ahead of final roster cuts before the 2024 season. He was claimed on waivers by the Indianapolis Colts. After spending a year with the team, Indy waived the defender ahead of final roster cuts in 2025. Womack was claimed off waivers by the Tennessee Titans. He was with the team until being waived last week.

Womack has appeared in 45 games and has made 10 starts during his career. With those opportunities, Womack has registered 66 tackles, 12 pass deflections, three interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and one tackle for loss.

Jets Have an Affinity for Former Titans Starting Cornerbacks

Womack appeared in five games this season for Tennessee and started in one of those contests. The talented cornerback now becomes the second former starting member of the Titans’ secondary to join the Jets this year.

General manager Darren Mougey struck a trade with Tennessee on September 23. Gang Green shipped off a 2026 sixth-round pick in exchange for Jarvis Brownlee Jr and a 2026 seventh-round pick.

All the Jets had to give up was a late-round pick swap for the rights to Brownlee.

Brownlee, 24, entered the league as the No. 146 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft. Before coming to the Jets, Brownlee had appeared in 19 games and had made 16 starts for Tennessee.

With the green and white, Brownlee has been the Jets’ full-time starting nickel defender. He has appeared in seven games. With those opportunities, Brownlee has registered two pass deflections, a forced fumble, a tackle for loss, and 36 total tackles.

That turnover that Brownlee forced was the first turnover of the season for the Jets’ defense.

Mougey Continues to Flex His Muscles With Savvy Under-the-Radar Maneuvers

Brownlee has not only helped the Jets immediately as a starter, but he will be a key piece of their future.

Brownlee’s cap charge for the 2026 season is a mere $1.1 million, and he is under contract through 2027.

Jets teammate Quincy Williams described Brownlee as a “baby linebacker” to ESPN’s Rich Cimini because of his “physical style.”

“Sometimes he’s too physical for his own good (team-high eight penalties), a continuation of his high penalty rate with the Tennessee Titans, but the Jets don’t seem concerned. Brownlee, whose emergence made Carter expendable, is responsible for the Jets’ only takeaway (forced fumble). That should count for something, right?” Cimini wrote.
