Jets’ Star Not Expecting Extension, ‘I’m Not Their Guy’

The New York Jets completed a top down renovation over the offseason. The team brought in a new general manager, two new coordinators, and a new head coach. Usually when a team shifts leadership it is the fringe players that fear for their job, but in the Jets case, it’s one of the team’s biggest stars.

Breece Hall spoke to the media after Saturday’s practice, telling them that he does not expect a contract extension to get done before the season begins.

“I’m not really expecting it before the season,” Hall told reporters. “We got a new head coach (Aaron Glenn), new GM (Darren Mougey). Obviously, I wasn’t drafted by them, I’m not their guy. So for me, like I said, I’ve got to prove it every day. For me, I’ve got a chip on my shoulder. I feel like right now, OK, it’s my last chance.”

As a second round pick, Hall is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract. This means if no deal is done before the end of the season, the 24-year-old from Iowa State University will be hitting the free agent market for the first time in his career.

With Hall slated to make the most money he’s ever made in the final year of his contract, the running back says he is not focused on an extension right now.

“For me, it’s always been, ‘he’s got potential, he’s got potential,’ but now I want to be the product,” Hall said. “It’s all about putting my head down and working. I don’t really want to discuss all the other stuff. For me, I just try to worry about ball right now.”

What About Sauce And Wilson?

Hall is right, this new regime did not draft him. They were not with him when he logged more than 1,500 total yards two years ago, or when he fumbled the rock six times last season. However, that didn’t seem to matter much for his two teammates who each signed record breaking extensions just a few weeks ago.

Darren Mougey had never seen Garrett Wilson toe-tap a touchdown in front of the home fans at Met Life Stadium. Aaron Glenn had never seen Sauce Gardner jump an out route and cause a turnover at a pivotal moment.

It’s easy to forget these guys all came in together in 2022. Hall has watched each of the other three top draft picks from the class (Sauce, Wilson, Jermaine Johnson) receive extensions this summer.

We aren’t in the business of pity, and results always come first, but seeing your team be so quick to extend your friends has to make the running back feel some type of way.

How Much Would It Cost To Lock Up Breece Hall

Saquon Barkley ruined the running back market for who knows how long. The Eagles ball carrier signed a more than 20 million dollar a year deal then proceeded to have the best running back season the NFL has seen in more than a decade.

Hall is younger than most of his counterparts, but as far as the league’s top running backs are concerned no one has more to prove than Breece.

Should Hall post the kind of season he needs to to find himself in serious contract talks, the young star would be looking right around the 10 million dollar APY range, right?

The only players making significantly more than that are Saquon, Christian McCaffrey, Derrick Henry, and Jonathan Taylor.

A first time 1,000 yard rushing season doesn’t put Hall in this conversation yet does it?

I predict Hall will be extended, but not to a long term deal, and not before the season begins. A two-year, $21 million extension gives him time to prove he is one of the big dogs without locking him into a deal he might out play.
