Jets’ Top Trade Target Is 25-Year-Old Commanders OL: Analyst

The New York Jets could surprisingly be purchasing pieces ahead of the 2025 NFL trade deadline.

If they go in that direction, ESPN NFL analyst Seth Walder revealed who should be their top trade target: Washington Commanders offensive lineman Brandon Coleman.

“If the Jets acquire any player, he has to be young and cost-controlled. Coleman started 12 games at tackle as a rookie in 2024 and two this season at guard before being benched. But he was above average in both pass and run block win rate as a rookie, and the same was true in his brief stint as a guard this year. He could provide immediate competition for John Simpson at guard, and perhaps at left tackle if 2024 first-round pick Olu Fashanu continues to struggle,” Walder explained.

Some More Details on This Talented Big Man

Coleman, 25, entered the league as the No. 67 overall pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft.

He is listed at 6-foot-6 and weighs 320 pounds. Coleman has appeared in 19 games and has started in 14 of those.

He still has two and a half years remaining on his $6 million rookie contract.

“Mysteriously, for the last three consecutive weeks, the Commanders have not played nor even permitted starting guard Brandon Coleman to be active. It is strange because, after all, the Commanders drafted Coleman in 2024 and immediately talked about him being their left tackle. He played in all 17 games of the 2024 season, starting the final 16 games at left tackle,” Ivan Lambert wrote for the Commanders Wire. “After starting the first two games at left guard, Coleman hasn’t even put on the pads on game day the last three weeks.”

Coleman got hurt during training camp, which opened up the opportunity for Chris Paul to leapfrog him on the depth chart, according to Lambert.

Darren Mougey Has Been Cooking With Trades for the Jets

General manager Darren Mougey has only been on the job for a couple of months, but he has developed a reputation as a savvy trader.

He has received tons of praise for his acquisitions of Harrison Phillips, Jowon Briggs, and, most recently, Jarvis Brownlee Jr.

Phillips and Briggs have solidified the interior of the Jets’ defensive line. Brownlee took Michael Carter II’s job and forced the team to ship him off to the Philadelphia Eagles because he no longer had a role here.

Perhaps Mougey could make magic again ahead of the trade deadline.

Jets Have Massive Offensive Line Questions This Offseason

Heading into the 2026 offseason, the Jets have three of their starting offensive linemen under contract. That group includes: Olu Fashanu, Armand Membou, and Joe Tippmann.

Three of the starters are set to be free agents: John Simpson, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and Josh Myers. AVT was the starting right guard but was lost for the year before Week 1.

Who are the Jets bringing back? All of them? None of them? Some of them?

Also, who is starting where? When Vera-Tucker was lost for the season, the Jets re-shuffled the offensive line.

Do the Jets stay with the new combo of musical chairs? Or do they go back to what they had before?

Adding new young offensive linemen to the roster will provide the Jets with options heading into the offseason.
