Jets Trade Idea Cuts Ties With Former All-Pro, Lands $15.4 Million WR

The New York Jets, at 1-7, are likely to be active ahead of next week’s trade deadline.

In fact, they’ve already gotten started.

Today, they shipped out nickel cornerback Michael Carter II to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for wide receiver John Metchie and a late-round pick swap.

But other players across New York’s roster are either holdovers from the previous regime, or just aren’t in the future plans of Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey.

One of those players, linebacker Quincy Williams, is in the final year of his contract, and the Jets front office does not seem to be interested in extending the former All-Pro.

Could they find a trade partner for the 29-year-old?

Jets Trade Proposal Lands Jauan Jennings from 49ers

In a trade idea first proposed by Mike Luciano of the Jet Press, the New York Jets could send Williams to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for disgruntled wide receiver Jauan Jennings.

In what would be a complete one-for-one swap, both teams land impactful players at positions of need.

Jennings, who requested a trade over the summer, is looking for a long-term extension.

In this hypothetical trade, the Jets land the former Tennessee Volunteer.

Without star Garrett Wilson in the lineup the last few weeks, the Jets’ receiving corps has been rough.

They’ve relied on veteran Tyler Johnson and rookie Arian Smith, leading to mixed results.

Jennings is an immediate upgrade right now and for the rest of the season.

They could also give him the contract he’s looking for as New York’s WR2.

“Jennings might be a bit of a one-year wonder, as he has just one season with more than 500 yards receiving, but he was one of San Francisco’s most clutch playmakers. Even without gaudy production, you don’t earn a nickname like ‘3rd and Jauan’ without being a reliable target over the middle,” wrote Luciano.

“The 6-3, 215-pound Jennings will not only fit in well on a Jets team that wants to run the ball as much as possible, but the stylistic contrast between him, the elusive separator Wilson, and the mad bombing speedster in Arian Smith could make for a very diverse passing game in the 2026 season.”

The Jets are likely to have a rookie quarterback under center in 2026, as their Tankathon position suggests.

They should certainly be trying to load up their offense with as many weapons as possible to make life easy for a first-year signal caller.

Would the 49ers Make the Deal?

The San Francisco 49ers are hurting in the linebacker department after losing superstar Fred Warner to a season-ending ankle injury.

Williams could be the replacement they’re looking for, especially given his familiarity with current 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh.

Saleh was the New York Jets head coach from 2021-2024 and was a massive reason for Williams’ emergence as an All-Pro linebacker.

His best season came in 2023, when the Murray State product racked up 139 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 10 pass breakups, and one interception.

Williams has not been as effective in head coach Glenn’s defensive scheme, and given his age and contract makes sense as a trade candidate.

With the Niners anticipating a return from Brandon Aiyuk and their investment in the position of first-round pick Ricky Pearsall, it’s reasonable to suggest they would be willing to part ways with Jennings.
