Jets Veteran Hurt Packers QB Jordan Love, Forcing Him to Have Surgery

The New York Jets had a dominant performance against the Green Bay Packers in the preseason opener.

To add injury to insult, the Packers lost 30-10, and now their starting quarterback, Jordan Love, is hurt.

Love “had surgery” on Tuesday to repair his left thumb after sustaining “a ligament injury” during Week 1 of the preseason, per ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.

Demovsky revealed that “It happened on Love’s last play, when he was sacked by Jets defensive tackle Jay Tufele.”

The team expects him to be ready for the regular season opener.

A Potential Sneak Peek of What’s to Come

It was notable when head coach Aaron Glenn announced his starters would play in the preseason opener. Equally as notable was the Packers’ decision to do the same.

This provided the best opportunity for equal analysis and a measuring stick for this Jets team ahead of the regular season.

Love was the starting QB for the Packers for two drives.

On the first drive, the Packers quickly went three-and-out. On the second drive, Green Bay had eight plays for 23 yards but were met with the same result, another punt.

Love finished the day 1-of-5 for seven passing yards.

If that game was any indication, this Jets defense is ready for takeoff.

A Couple of Injuries to the Jets QB Room

Coach Glenn announced that backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor underwent a “minor scope” knee surgery. That will knock him out for the entirety of the preseason, and the team hopes he will be ready by Week 1.

That now shines a spotlight on the last two remaining quarterbacks not named Taylor or Justin Fields.

The Jets have third-year passer Adrian Martinez and undrafted free agent Brady Cook on the roster.

Cook had been ahead of Martinez during training camp. In the preseason game against the Packers, Cook received all of the first-half reps sans Fields’ opening drive of the game. Martinez served as the closer, getting the entirety of the second half reps.

However, Cook suffered an injury during the Jets versus New York Giants joint practice session on Tuesday, August 12.

He was visibly in pain, seemingly couldn’t put a lot of weight on his ankle, and had to be helped off by multiple medical personnel.

After practice, Coach Glenn revealed that Cook had his foot stepped on. He didn’t think it would be serious, but more answers would come when he went inside the building.

“Jets rookie QB Brady Cook being taken off the field in a golf cart after the Jets-Giants joint practice in Florham Park,” Dan Leberfeld posted on social media.

Jets May Be Forced to Add Another Arm to the Bullpen

Taylor is out for the whole preseason. At most, Fields is likely only going to play part of this second preseason game against the Giants. That leaves just Martinez and Cook to figure the rest of it out.

If Cook is in any way compromised, the Jets will likely have to add a camp arm for practices and maybe some mop-up duty for the rest of the preseason.

The honest truth is the Jets are likely to only carry two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. That could change if Taylor isn’t ready for the regular season.
