The New York Jets are doing their homework on the available quarterbacks in free agency.
NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo shared on X previously Twitter that “the Jets worked out veteran QBs C.J. Beathard and Nathan Peterman today.”
Head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that Tyrod Taylor underwent knee surgery that will keep him out for the entirety of the preseason.

“Neither QB signed today. Three healthy QBs on the Jets roster for now,” Garafolo added.
Taylor’s Uncertain Return Timetable Opens the Jets up for a QB Conversation
Head coach Aaron Glenn told the media that Taylor underwent a “minor scope” on his knee.
“He couldn’t say for sure that Taylor will be ready for the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 7,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini said.
“I don’t think he’ll be playing in the preseason,” Glenn said Tuesday after a joint practice with the New York Giants via Cimini. “But, hopefully, he’ll be ready for Week 1.”
Jets Are Limited at the QB Position
Justin Fields is the unquestioned QB1. Taylor was penciled in as the primary backup.
If he is compromised in any way, that leaves third-year passer Adrian Martinez and undrafted free agent Brady Cook.
Cook had his foot stepped on during the Jets-Giants joint practice. Glenn didn’t think the injury was serious, but Cook appeared to be in visible pain on the field.
Neither player has appeared in an NFL regular-season game.
Peterman Has a Questionable Track Record at QB
The former Pitt product entered the NFL as the No. 171 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft.
Over the last eight years, Peterman has suited up for five different NFL teams, including two stints with the Las Vegas Raiders.
He has appeared in 15 games and has made five starts. Peterman has over triple the number of interceptions (13) versus passing touchdowns (four) in his career.
Peterman’s infamous run with the Buffalo Bills is the most notable stretch in a bad way from his NFL career. During his rookie year in 2017, he replaced Tyrod Taylor in the starting lineup in the middle of the season.
Peterman faced the Los Angeles Chargers and imploded, throwing five interceptions in the first half. The Chargers ended up smacking the Bills, 54-24.
Fast forward eight years, and Peterman is once again being considered as a potential replacement for Taylor.

The other quarterback the Jets worked out was C.J. Beathard.
Beathard, 31, entered the league as the No. 104 overall pick in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft.
He has appeared in 32 games and has made 13 starts. Beathard has accumulated 3,886 passing yards, has completed 60.4% of his passes, and has a 19 touchdown to 14 interception ratio.
Beathard has played for three NFL teams during his career, including two stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
These workouts could simply be due diligence or it could be an indication that the Jets are preparing for a world without Taylor at the beginning of the season due to injury.
