When Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh was asked about his long-standing rivalry with Las Vegas Raiders head coach Pete Carroll, his answer didn’t come with the sharp jabs or fiery remarks that once defined their head-to-head battles.
Instead, he offered admiration and reflection. Harbaugh acknowledged Carroll as “one of the best,” highlighting the respect that has developed between the two leaders despite their longstanding rivalry.

Harbaugh didn’t shy away from the history. “That’s expected and pretty well documented,” he said. “He’s [Pete Carroll] a great coach, one of the best. A lot of respect. I always thought that if I had ever played for him or on one of his teams…I bet we would have been really good friends.”
That response might surprise fans who remember the days when Harbaugh’s San Francisco 49ers and Carroll’s Seattle Seahawks clashed in some of the most physical, high-stakes battles of the 2010s.
But for Raiders fans, it’s also a reminder that the AFC West is about to become even more competitive. Harbaugh’s respect for Carroll doesn’t erase the fire that fueled their rivalry. In fact, he went on to admit that when they were both coaching, they were “trying to gouge each other’s eyes out…in the competitive spirit of that.”
Harbaugh on Carroll: “Nothing but Respect”
Harbaugh didn’t just talk about the clashes of the past. He praised Carroll for being consistent.
“Same person, same coach every day. Nothing but respect for that and does a tremendous job.” That remark offers insight into Harbaugh’s mindset and what Raiders fans should expect to face twice a season. He values toughness, reliability, and coaches who stick to their identity. Those qualities are the same ones the Raiders themselves need to cultivate if they want to rise out of mediocrity and reclaim their spot among the NFL’s best.
Over the past decade, Las Vegas has dealt with instability, including coaching changes, uneven draft results, and flashes of success followed by regression.
Harbaugh’s comments about Carroll underline the importance of building a consistent foundation. The Raiders don’t just need a coach who can fire up the locker room for one big game. They need leadership that’s unshakable week after week, season after season.
That’s what Carroll has proven to do, and will continue to do in Las Vegas.
At the heart of Harbaugh’s answer was respect, but not softness. He made it clear that competition, even with admiration for the other side, means going all out.
“It’s competition at the highest level and that’s what it’s all about,” Harbaugh said.
And for Raider Nation, that means preparing for a Chargers team led by a coach who thrives on rivalries and builds his team to win them. Harbaugh’s words may have sounded like praise, but underneath them was the same message that defined his time in San Francisco: get ready to go to battle.
