Joe Schoen Addresses Giants Woes in 2025: ‘Not Where We Want to Be’

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen addressed the media for the first time this season on Tuesday, amid their second consecutive 2-11 start.

Since taking over the job in 2021, Schoen has accumulated a 20-43-1 record as the lead decision-maker in New York, raising questions about whether he should remain in place as the team’s general manager.

“Two wins is not where we want to be right now, it’s not good enough. I understand the frustration from fans, ownership, the people inside the building. Nobody is more frustrated than myself,” Schoen said in his opening statement.

“It starts with me. I’m tasked with trying to get this organization back in the proper direction. The standard is to compete for championships year in and year out. That’s the plan moving forward.”

Joe Schoen Explains Why He Deserves to Lead the Giants Going Forward

The reporters in attendance put the heat on Schoen once he opened it up to questions, and one of the first things he was asked was why he thinks he should stay on as the New York Giants general manager after his past failures.

“Has it been perfect? No. But I’m very confident in my staff, myself, and our ability to get this franchise back to where it needs to go,” Schoen responded.

“We do have a good, young quarterback that’s on a rookie contract for the next four years…you have a good nucleus, you have a good left tackle, you have a wide receiver that had a historic year as a rookie, a good running back room, pass rushers, there’s pieces in place…”

“I do have confidence in our ability and our process to find the next coach to lead the organization. I know we’re going to get it right.”

Should Joe Schoen Be in Charge of the Giants’ Coaching Search?

While interim coach Mike Kafka will get an on-the-job chance to become the New York Giants’ next head coach, Schoen stressed that the offseason interview process will be thorough.

“As for the coaching search, we’re going to do everything we can right now to support Kafka, that’s our primary focus is give Kafka everything he needs in order to succeed over these next four weeks,” Schoen told reporters.

“At the appropriate time, we’ll get into potential coaches, research, and we’ll do a thorough, collaborative research and come up with the best coach to lead the New York Giants going into the 2026 season.”

Some fans obviously won’t want Schoen to spearhead the coaching search, after all, he was the one who hired Brian Daboll in the first place.

It’s not often general managers get a second chance to select their head coach, but it appears Schoen will have that opportunity.

As for concerns that an incoming head coach won’t want to be tied to an in-place general manager, Schoen downplayed the sentiment.

“The calls we’ve got, I think we’re going to be able to fill the job.”

Joe Schoen Owns His Mistakes

What you can credit Schoen for in this admittedly difficult press conference is that he owned up to his mistakes.

The New York Giants general manager understands that he hasn’t been perfect, and relayed that there have been decisions he would take back over his four-year tenure with Big Blue.

“The chances of me batting 1.000 are gone, because I’ve made mistakes. Everybody is going to make mistakes. I’m better today than I was four years ago when I got this job. A year from now, God willing I’m standing here, I’m going to be better than I am today. That’s all I can do,” Schoen stressed to reporters.

“It’s the gold standard – it’s still the New York Giants. Flagship franchise…Have I screwed up? Have I made mistakes? Absolutely. But I’m not going to make the same mistake twice, and we’re going to continue to get better.”

With four games to go in the regular season, it remains to be seen if Schoen will be safe as the general manager.

If his roster spirals even further out of control than it already has, then maybe the Giants will be holding interviews for two of their most important positions come January.
