Joel Klatt Has Strong Message for ‘Chipotle Guy’ Who Started John Mateer Rumor

When John Mateer was injured during the September 20 game against the Auburn Tigers, most people were saying it was unlikely that he would return in time for the Red River Rivalry.

But in late September, an anonymous source said they heard Mateer give a different story while in line at Chipotle. This set off a string of rumors that Mateer might be back after all — rumors that are looking more and more likely to be true.

Football analyst Joel Klatt weighed in on the Chipotle guy who started the viral rumor, with a surprising (and funny) suggestion.

Joel Klatt Wants the ‘Chipotle Guy’ to Have a Statue in His Honor

Klatt jokingly said that this anonymous Chipotle guy deserves a statue in his honor.

“They might need to put up a couple more statues out there for the Chipotle rumor guy,” Klatt said during an episode of “The Joel Klatt Show.”

“Remember the Chipotle guy? He’s the one that started this rumor,” Klatt said. “He’s like, ‘Hey, I saw John Mateer at Chipotle, told me he’s coming back for Red River. Snaps a picture, puts it on — what was it — Instagram, the snappy chat, whatever it is… He posted it online… All of a sudden now it’s a question about whether John Mateer is gonna come back for Red River. Maybe that guy needs a statue.”

On Thursday, Mateer was upgraded to “probable” for returning to play against Texas on Saturday. Sources confirmed with ESPN that he was on track and going to attempt to play.

Mateer has only missed one game since having surgery on September 24.

The Rumor Started with a Post on the TexasAgs Message Board that a Chipotle Employee Later Confirmed

The rumors began on September 30 with a post on the TexasAgs message board.

A poster named “OklahomaSoonerAg” wrote: “I have relevant news: Sooners QB John Mateer will play vs. Texas. I was in Chipotle tongiht (in Norman, OK) and Mateer was in line in front of me. The tortilla presser asked Mateer how his hand is doing and Mateer said great. Mateer then said he is ‘100% going to play vs Texas.’”

Then a photo surfaced showing the tortilla presser with Mateer, proving that he really was there.

On October 8, a reporter tracked down the tortilla presser. He confirmed the anonymous poster’s report. Yes, he said, Mateer did tell him that he was going to be able to play in the Red River Rivalry game.

Now it looks like the prediction will come to pass.
