Jordan Henderson will miss the rest of the World Cup due to the freak wrist injury he suffered after England’s win over Mexico.

The Three Lions booked their place in the quarter-finals thanks to a thrilling 3-2 win at the Azteca, with Jude Bellingham scoring the first two and Harry Kane the third from the penalty spot.

There were joyous scenes after the game in Mexico City, with England set to take on Norway in the last eight on Saturday in Miami.

However, there was an unexpected turn of events as Henderson, who was an unused substitute on the day, badly injured himself in the celebrations.

The Brentford midfielder hopped over the advertising hoardings and slipped, landing awkwardly on his arm.

Henderson quickly received treatment on the field and was stretchered off after oxygen was administered.

It has since been revealed that he will require surgery on his wrist following the bizarre incident and will be out for the rest of the tournament.

The 36-year-old travelled from the Azteca to a hospital in Mexico City with a member of the England medical staff, while the rest of the squad returned to their base in Kansas City.

Henderson was unlikely to play much of a role in the team going forward, but it is a blow to Thomas Tuchel as his options are diminished ahead of the quarter-finals.

Reece James has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury, while Jarell Quansah is now suspended following his red card against Mexico.

Speaking in a post-match press conference, Tuchel was jubilant with the win but the moment was soured by Henderson’s unfortunate accident.

‘It’s a very special night for us. Mixed feelings because I am exhausted and emotional, but sad because Jordan injured his wrist,’ he said.

‘It’s quite a serious injury. He’s in hospital. It doesn’t fit with the rest of the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don’t know the procedure, but the doc told me he’s in hospital.’

The manager had said immediately after the incident: ‘Jordan is not good. I have a defender with a red card. He has injured his wrist. It looks really bad.’
