Josh Allen Admits Why the Bills Lost So Badly to the Bears

The Buffalo Bills are licking their wounds after a tough preseason loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday, August 17, and even though it’s just the preseason and basically meaningless football, it didn’t feel good to see the Bills smooshed to smitheries. Of course, the team wasn’t playing their starts, so it will be a different story when the Buffalo Bills take the field with Josh Allen at the helm, but the showing brought up some concerns regarding the state of the Bills’ backup crew and coaching.

The preseason is a great time to look at a team’s second string players and see where they might need to add some depth. That’s why a significant loss in the preseason may be telling, even if it doesn’t say anything about that team’s most prominent players. So, the Buffalo Bills don’t have too much to worry about with their first string, but that second string could bring some issues.

Allen is loyal to his team, so he wasn’t going to blast his colleagues in the postgame press conference. But, he also didn’t want to sugarcoat anything. Speaking with the media after the loss, Allen was positive and very honest about why the Bills fell so hard to the Bears.

Josh Allen Says the Buffalo Bills Let Something Slip

Speaking after the game, Allen admitted that things didn’t go well for the Bills during the game. But, he said that he’s taking it “with a grain of salt. Watching the film, it’s never as bad or good as you think it is. Trying to correct things.”

The telling comment that he made was that the Bills don’t do much game planning for the preseason, which is likely why they didn’t see prepared. “We don’t game plan much in the preseason here,” he said.

Allen added, “We just ask that guys go out there and put their best stuff on the field. I don’t know if we did that as a whole unit. But again, that’s why we play the preseason, that’s why we’re doing joint practices to try different things to figure out what guys can and can’t do and what we can and can’t do as an offense,” He continued, “Figure out what we’re good at and what we’re not good at.”

Allen also said that he and the team is taking this experience as a learning experience. “It’s preseason at the end of the day,” he said. “I’m sure people are making a big deal out of it, but we’re using that as an opportunity to get better.” So, it’s great that Allen is using this loss as an opportunity for growth.

The Buffalo Bills’ Power Rankings

Ahead of the new season, Ralph Vacchiano at Fox Sports released his 2025 NFL power rankings and put the Buffalo Bills at No. 4 on the tally. In his assessment, Vacchinao said great things about the award-winning Allen.

“As long as they have MVP Josh Allen at quarterback, they should reside in the top five,” he notes in the feature. “Honestly, if someone could guarantee they wouldn’t have to face the Chiefs in the playoffs, they might be No. 1 or 2. Allen is that good, though it would be nice if the Bills would put more offensive talent around him.”

Let’s hope that Allen and the Bills jump ahead of the Chiefs this season. There’s no reason why they can’t, especially if they use the preseason to fix some of their weaknesses.
