Josh Allen Sends Message to Patriots About Stefon Diggs

It’s safe to say the New England Patriots are still learning about Stefon Diggs, learning what to expect from a wide receiver who’s an All-Pro talent when healthy, but whose recent off-field antics have provoked concern and controversy. Ironically, the Pats have gotten some advice from a bitter rival about what they can expect from Diggs during the 2025 season.

NFL MVP and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen played alongside Diggs for a quartet of seasons from 2020-2023. The duo tormented the Patriots and helped Diggs earn four Pro Bowl berths.

Allen knows what makes the wideout tick, and he let Pats QB1 Drake Maye know what’s in store. Speaking to Sports Illustrated’s Liam McKeone, Allen said Diggs “brings a lot of security for Drake. Obviously, having the knowledge of playing in the league for so long, he has that veteran mentorship that he can give to Drake.”

Those are encouraging words from the quarterback who’s owned the AFC East while the Patriots have become also-rans since Tom Brady left town five years ago. The Pats took Maye third overall in the 2024 NFL draft to restore the franchise to its former glories, but he won’t do it without a legitimate No. 1 receiver.

Diggs arrived this offseason with the right pedigree, but it’s been anything but a smooth transition since.

Josh Allen Endorsement Good News for Patriots

Allen’s inside knowledge of Diggs shouldn’t be dismissed. Not when the 31-year-old speedster played the best football of his career when Allen was throwing the passes.

Diggs reeled in over 100 catches and topped 1,000 yards every year he was in Buffalo. His dynamic double act with Allen helped the Bills snatch divisional supremacy away from New England, with Diggs burning the Patriots for seven touchdowns, per StatMuse.

Closing the gap to the Bills is why the Patriots took a chance on signing Diggs after one injury-hit season with the Houston Texans in 2024. He tore his ACL in Week 8, but Diggs has been healthy enough to participate in offseason activities for his new team.

Diggs’ availability has been good news for Maye, who needs to reach stardom in his second season. Allen praised Maye’s potential to McKeone: “I think Drake is super talented, he’s one of my favorite young quarterbacks in the league. I’ve spent some time around him and he’s got his head on his shoulders the right way. He just does things the right way. I think that he exemplifies football. He’ll take it and run, he’ll throw it and to have someone like Stefon is going to help him out a lot.”

That’s high praise and a subliminal acknowledgement from Allen about Maye possibly being the biggest threat to the Bills moving forward. The Patriots can keep pace, but only if Diggs forms the same connection with Maye he had with Allen.

Patriots Need Stefon Diggs Fully Focused

Diggs has been talking up his efforts to get back to 100 percent. It’s what the Patriots want to hear, particularly after the controversy surrounding a video of Diggs partying on a boat and offering a bag containing an unknown substance to female partygoers.

The 10-year pro subsequently appeared at OTAs and minicamp, where he went through his paces trying to show he’d lost none of the old speed and agility, per the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed.

A less than auspicious start to life with the Patriots, combined with last season’s knee problem, has Diggs rated as one of the ‘riskiest’ signings in the league. Yet, he’s always played like a true go-to receiver when fully healthy and focused.

If that’s the version of Diggs the Pats get this season, Maye will be a better quarterback. Maybe even good enough to give Allen and the Bills a real scare.
