Julian Alvarez makes dramatic U-turn on Arsenal transfer

Julian Alvarez has U-turned on a proposed move to Arsenal and is beginning to see it as his ‘only option’ before this summer’s transfer deadline, according to reports in Spain.

Arsenal have set their sights on securing a last-ditch deal for the 26-year-old Atletico Madrid striker, with Mikel Arteta eager to add further strength and a genuine goalscoring threat to his title-winning attack.

The Gunners have already seen Morgan Rogers snub a switch to the Emirates to join bitter rivals Chelsea, while Vinicius Junior opted to turn down the club’s advances to extend his stay at Real Madrid.

It has seen Alvarez move rapidly to the forefront of Arsenal’s thinking with just days remaining of the window, despite the forward’s clear preference being Barcelona for much of the summer.

But according to Madrid-based newspaper Marca, Alvarez has come to accept that Atleti will stand in the way of his ‘dream’ move to the Camp Nou and he now sees Arsenal as his only feasible escape route out of the Metropolitano Stadium.

After being named as a substitute against Villarreal at the weekend, Alvarez was jeered by his own fans while warming up on the touchline – and these boos ratcheted up to a deafening degree when he was introduced in place of Lee Kang-in in the 66th minute.

Alvarez proceeded to head straight down the tunnel as the contest finished 2-2 – intensifying the level of animosity amongst Atleti supporters – and the attacker had already left before his team-mates could even make their way to the dressing room.

The report claims the sorry episode brought Atleti’s dwindling hopes of reaching a resolution with Alvarez’s camp to bed and the situation has prompted the Argentina international to strongly consider Premier League champions Arsenal.

Perhaps tellingly, Alvarez’s family were not in attendance on Sunday despite the fact they have been near ever-present throughout his two-year stay in the Spanish capital.

The 2022 World Cup winner also took no part in first-team training on Wednesday, informing club officials that he had endured a bad night’s sleep and was in no condition to complete the session.

Separate reports emanating out of Spain earlier on Wednesday claimed Alvarez had – until that point – been giving Arsenal the cold shoulder, even declining a phone call from head coach Mikel Arteta.

Barcelona saw an audacious €100million (£85.7million) bid for Alvarez rejected out of hand by Atleti last month, with Diego Simeone’s side said to be furious over their rivals’ protracted pursuit.

But in an interview with Barca’s in-house media team this afternoon, club president Joan Laporta insisted the offer remained on the table after he had apparently learned that been negotiating with another club.

‘We made an offer from club to club. I confirmed this offer in a personal phone conversation with [Atleti president] Miguel Ángel Gil.

‘They told me they had no intention of selling because they had no alternative to Julian, and I told them that we were interested, but that we respected their decision not to sell, although if they found an alternative in this transfer window, we would be interested in making the signing.

‘[Barcelona sporting director] Deco and I thought that, seeing as they weren’t selling him, we’d put the matter on hold. What’s happened? We’ve received information that Atlético de Madrid is negotiating with other clubs for the player.

‘We’re still present with our offer because it’s common knowledge that the player wants to come to Barca.

‘This situation has created a lot of noise that isn’t due to any actions by Barca. We spoke with Enrique Cerezo, and then he spoke. I have a lot of respect for him, and I want to say that Barca has risen to the occasion. 

‘We’ve done the same as we do with other clubs. We’re still present, and the offer is still valid; it remains in case Atleti wants to sell the player.’

However, in response to Laporta’s remarks, Atleti reasserting that they had no intention of entering into business with the reigning Spanish champions.

‘There is a zero per cent chance of selling him to Barca. This situation isn’t about money; it’s about dignity,’ the club said.

‘A campaign full of lies and half-truths have been created. The only ones paying the price for all this are Atletico.’

Alvarez has racked up 49 goals and 17 assists for Atleti since joining the club in an £81.5m move from Manchester City back in 2024.

The sought-after Argentine still has four years remaining on his current contract with Atleti.
