Justin Herbert Gives Major Update After Chargers Beat Cowboys

It was another road win for the Los Angeles Chargers, securing a 34-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys on December 21 at AT&T Stadium. Moreover, Justin Herbert completed 23 of 29 pass attempts for 300 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Despite having surgery in early December 2025 to repair a fractured metacarpal in his non-throwing left hand, stabilized with a plate and screws after an injury against the Las Vegas Raiders, Herbert is still performing at a high level.

He played in the next game against the Philadelphia Eagles, wearing a large glove and relying mainly on shotgun formations to manage the wrist. Furthermore, after beating Dallas, the Chargers’ star provided an update on his injury.

“It’s getting better,” Herbert told reporters postgame. “The swelling’s going down, and I have a much better grip on the ball now. I think every week, every day helps, just getting used to it and allowing the bone to heal. So, it’s been good so far… The hand held up pretty well [against the Cowboys] just kind of landed on it funny.”

Chargers QB Justin Herbert Talks Gripping the Football on Run Attempts

Another aspect of Herbert’s game that requires a good grip on the football is his ability to use his legs. The Los Angeles quarterback also spoke about how the grip while running continues to improve as he is a couple of weeks removed from his surgery.

“It’s getting better,” Herbert added. “Just getting the swelling down, just getting better grip and mobility of it. That’s been the biggest thing. I felt like today I could hold on to the ball better. So I think as long as we’re going in the right direction, it’s good.”

Herbert is getting comfortable holding the football, whether it’s to make a pass attempt or to run with it, which is all good news for the Chargers. It will be interesting to see if this good news continues into Week 17 as they play the Houston Texans, another team fighting for a playoff spot in the AFC.

Chargers Extend Win Streak to Four Games After Beating Cowboys

The Chargers have won four straight games as they look to head into the playoffs on a positive note. After the contest, Herbert also spoke about the team’s overall performance in securing the win over the Cowboys.

“All three phases played really well,” Herbert said. “Defense came up with some big stops. I think held them to a shutout in the second half. And so that’s kind of the game that we were expecting. We knew they are a very good football team. They’re much better than their record indicates. And for us to be able to walk away out of this place with a win, I think it’s really good for us.”

Herbert and Co. were able to limit the amount of time Dallas had the football, with Los Angeles holding a lopsided 34:27 minutes while the Cowboys had the ball for 25:33 minutes. The difference in possession allowed the Chargers to record 452 total yards against the Dallas defense.
