Kevin Durant Reflects on Thunder Winning NBA Title After His Departure

Kevin Durant was the Oklahoma City Thunder’s first superstar when the franchise left Seattle in 2008. He represented the squad from 2007 to 2016, and even though they won the title in 2025 without him, he provided his thoughts on the historic achievement.

The Thunder are coming off a remarkable 2024-25 season, finishing with a 68-14 record. This marked the best result in the franchise’s history, dominating the top spot of the Western Conference standings and the league.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the heart of their success, winning the regular-season MVP Award for his incredible efforts. He maintained this momentum in the playoffs, helping the Thunder beat the Indiana Pacers in a hard-fought seven-game series to win the team’s first-ever title in Oklahoma City.

It has been two months since the Thunder reached the mountaintop. Despite that, it didn’t stop fans from asking Durant about the achievement. Finally addressing the question on social media, the now-Houston Rockets star responded with a short and sarcastic but clear statement.

“Where will your mental be opening night when you watch the team that gave you everything raise a banner after you left them high and dry,” one fan asked.

“Finally. It’s been 10 years, bout time they win one lmaooo,” Durant posted on X.

It appears that Kevin Durant might be hiding his true thoughts on the Thunder winning the title after he left. It’s clear that he’s moved on from that chapter of his NBA career. However, it is possible that the thought might be bittersweet for him.

Durant led the Thunder to one NBA Finals appearance in 2012, losing to LeBron James and the Miami Heat after five games. Besides that, he got them to the West Finals four times in 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2016.

However, the lack of championship success compelled Durant to leave the squad. What surprised many was his teaming up with Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors, who he won two titles with in 2017 and 2018.

Durant eventually left them for the Brooklyn Nets in 2019, before going to the Phoenix Suns via trade in 2023. After the team underperformed in the three seasons he spent with them, he is now a member of the Rockets after Phoenix sent him there in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks and draft compensation.

Durant accomplished a lot throughout his NBA career, including reaching the 30,000-point mark last season. He will certainly be a first-ballot Hall of Famer when he calls it a career. However, it’s clear he has plenty of gas in the tank to keep going. Therefore, the Rockets will hope that he can get them over the hump and elevate them into title contention.

Durant’s comments come as the Thunder will host the Rockets on opening night. As a result, he will witness his former team hang the 2025 championship banner into the rafters before tipoff. While he may not express his thoughts in present time, he will probably reveal his true emotions once he sees that in his sights to start the new season.
