It’s not often that you can deploy a four-time Pro Bowler as your scout team quarterback. While Kirk Cousins won’t be starting again for the Falcons anytime soon, he’s still working to make a positive impact on the team.
When it comes to leadership and experience, there are few players who have more to offer to their younger teammates. In Atlanta, one player has used his bond with Cousins to build momentum toward earning a roster spot.
David Sills V Has Been Kirk Cousins’ Favorite Target Throughout Training Camp
After completing his second offseason in Atlanta, Kirk Cousins has had the time to build rapport with almost all of the wide receivers on the Falcons roster. But, there are few players who’ve built a more valuable relationship with Cousins than David Sills V.
According to ESPN’s Marc Raimondi, Sills has been Kirk Cousins’ favorite target on the second-team offense, strengthening his case for a roster spot. Cousins even called him “a pleasant surprise.”
“I think coaches are excited about the role he could play for us this year,” Cousins said. “I think he’s a very natural player, and I like having him out there.”
Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson told Raimondi that Sills “sees the game like a quarterback.” As a former quarterback, Sills can connect with Kirk Cousins in a way that most other receivers can’t. Robinson also praised Sills’ ability to line up at all three wide receiver positions, noting that he’s “almost like the second-team offense’s [Drake] London.”
Throughout his time in the NFL, Sills has been battling for a roster spot. While he had a short stint with the New York Giants, he hasn’t played a regular season game since 2023. It’s totally fair to question whether he should make the cut, but you can never question his work ethic.
Falcons Need Another Receiver to Step up in Darnell Mooney’s Absence
There’s no question that Sills V did all that he could to make the roster this offseason, especially in the eyes of Kirk Cousins. Unfortunately, he didn’t play during their preseason finale, signaling that he’s got a much better shot at ending up on the practice squad.
“There’s a lot of things that I can’t control, but I can control my attitude, effort and what I’m doing day in and day out at practice,” said Sills. “So, that’s really what I’m trying to work on now. And you got to just let the chips fall where they may.”
As for the rest of the wide receiver corps, Darnell Mooney‘s injury has opened up a door. But, it’s still unclear how long that door will be open. With that door open, will we see a receiver move up from Kirk Cousins and the second-team offense?
On the first day of practice, Mooney hurt his shoulder after diving for a pass. He still hasn’t practiced since, but head coach Raheem Morris and QB Michael Penix Jr. have offered up conflicting information on when to expect Mooney on the field.
“Morris said cryptically he was confident Mooney would return ‘this year,’ while quarterback Penix said he thinks Mooney will be available in Week 1 before adding he wasn’t sure,” wrote Josh Kendall of The Athletic on Saturday.
If Raheem Morris and Michael Penix Jr. are sending mixed messages to the media, we may have to wait until the Week 1 injury report for clarity on Mooney.
Either way, we know that the second-team receivers will have a consummate professional in Kirk Cousins to throw them the ball.
