Knicks May Target Specific Position With Remaining Free-Agent Money

Given everything that took place in the NBA’s Eastern Conference in the past two months, it’s very easy to look at the modest moves the Knicks made and declare them one of the big winners of the Summer of 2025. The Celtics have had to sell off pieces and are still not quite out of the financial woods while dealing with a season without Jayson Tatum, the Pacers lost Tyrese Haliburton to an Achilles tendon tear in the Finals and then lost Myles Turner to free agency, and though other teams (Orlando, Atlanta) improved, none made themselves true contenders.

The Knicks filled out their bench nicely, while essentially losing no significant parts, adding forward Guerschon Yabusele and scoring guard Jordan Clarkson. They replaced coach Tom Thibodeau with Mike Brown, and while the wisdom of that move can be questioned, he has been to the NBA Finals before and the Knicks should at least be positioned to keep moving forward in a conference that is teetering.

And, apparently, the Knicks are not done yet.

Knicks Have 1 Minimum Spot Left

That’s according to team insider Ian Begley of SNY, who is reporting that the Knicks are still in the hunt for a backup guard.

The Knicks do not have much money to work with, as the team is hard-capped at the NBA’s so-called second  apron. But they have room to sign another veteran, and the presumption is that they will look to add a guard. The Knicks have Jalen Brunson and backup Deuce McBride at the points, and will have to see whether young guards Pacome Dadiet and Tyler Kolek can fit into the rotation. Josh Hart and Jordan Clarkson will be the shooting guards.

As for potential additions to the group, the Knicks could bring back Cam Payne, Delon Wright or Landry Shamet, all of whom are serviceable backcourt players.

But Begley has more.

“The Knicks have been in touch with multiple backup guards on the market,” he wrote.

“Dante Exum considered the Knicks as a possible destination before he agreed to a deal with Dallas on Wednesday. As noted earlier, the Knicks touched base with free agentBen Simmons this week. So it seems like the Knicks are at least keeping an eye on the market for a backup guard.”

Begley added, too, that the team did background work on center DeAndre Ayton before he signed on with the Lakers.
