Lakers Make Decision on Move for Former $120 Million 12-Time All-Star Amid Slump

The Los Angeles Lakers are searching for answers amid the team’s losing streak. Yet, it looks like one of the solutions will not be a former All-Star who has consistently been linked to the Lakers in ongoing NBA rumors.

Despite the sudden availability of Chris Paul, the Lakers are unlikely to make a push to sign the veteran point guard, per The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer. Paul is friends with LeBron James and has been linked to playing alongside the superstar throughout his career. The point guard is a free agent after the Los Angeles Clippers released the 12-time All-Star.

“I’ve also been strongly advised not to expect the Lakers to emerge as a potential landing spot for Paul,” Fischer wrote in a December 27, 2025, story titled, “The Jake Fischer Latest is the latest from the NBA trade market.” “Despite the 40-year-old’s frequently cited desire to play as close to his Los Angeles-based family as possible, sources say that the Lakers are not considering Paul as a potential in-season addition despite the many years of Paul-to-the-Lakers speculation that have swirled leaguewide.

“Remember that our publisher reported on Dec. 14 that the Lakers have generally been very intentional in targeting players under 30 since the offseason when addressing various roster needs … and word Friday night that Austin Reaves will be lost for at least four weeks has created larger problems for the purple and gold anyway.”

Here’s what you need to know about the latest Lakers rumors.

Lakers Rumors: LA Is Likely to Pass on Signing Chris Paul

Paul’s days of commanding a lucrative contract are over as the star was previously on a one-year, $3.6 million deal with the Clippers. It marked the second straight one-year contract Paul signed after previously inking a four-year, $120 million deal with the Phoenix Suns.

Despite the potential team-friendly contract Paul would sign, the Lakers appear to be looking towards younger players. The Lakers have to figure things out fast as tensions are rising in Los Angeles amid the team’s recent struggles.

JJ Redick on Lakers: ‘We Don’t Care Enough Right Now’

Following the team’s blowout loss to the Houston Rockets on Christmas Day, the Lakers have now lost three straight games and sustained defeats in six of their last 10 outings. Lakers head coach JJ Redick appears perplexed about how to turn things around and called out the team following the franchise’s underwhelming performance on Christmas.

“Because we don’t care enough right now, and that’s the part that bothers you a lot,” Redick told reporters on December 25. “We don’t care enough to do the things that are necessary. We don’t care enough to be a professional. You know, we had it. We had it.

“I always say this about culture. I always say this about a good team being a functioning organism. It can change like that. We don’t have it right now,” Redick added.

“… It’s a matter of making the choice, and too often we have guys that don’t want to make that choice. And it’s pretty consistent who those guys are. And so Saturday’s practice, I told the guys, it’s going to be uncomfortable. The meeting is going to be uncomfortable.”
