Lamar Jackson has had a season to forget in 2025. The two-time NFL MVP came into this season with the intention of the Baltimore Ravens finally breaking through and making the Super Bowl run that has eluded them, but now, as the season nears its end, the Ravens seem further away than they have in Jackson’s tenure as a Raven.
Jackson exited the Ravens’ 28-24 loss to the New England Patriots late in the second quarter following getting a knee driven into his back by Patriots safety Craig Woodson on a three-yard QB run up the middle. After staying in for one more play, Jackson, in visible discomfort, left the field for what turned out to be the rest of the game.
Postgame, the state Jackson was in answering questions was not an encouraging sight for Ravens fans.
Barely Able to Stand
Lamar Jackson has been on the injury report nearly every week this season for various reasons and has missed several games. After suffering a back injury on Sunday, Jackson had to gut it out just to answer questions at his locker.
Ryan Mink of Ravens.com wrote about how Jackson struggled to walk out of the locker room and was slumped against his locker, answering questions from reporters.
Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic echoed Mink’s observations, writing a similar assessment of Jackson’s condition on Twitter.
“Jackson was in visible pain. Was leaning on lockers as he spoke. Struggled to get dressed, grunting and grimacing the whole time,” Zrebiec wrote.
In Mink’s article, he wrote about the excruciating pain that Jackson said he experienced, and how even a Toradol didn’t offer Jackson enough relief to make it back on the field.
“My legs felt great. I just got kneed in the back in the red zone. I just couldn’t finish the game. I was trying. I [got] a Toradol shot and stuff like that, but it still didn’t get [any] better,” Jackson said. “Pain. It hurts. [It] hurts.”
Jackson’s injury, combined with the loss, has left the Ravens’ immediate future in question in more ways than one.
Not in a Position to Play
John Harbaugh walked off the field Sunday knowing that it could be the final time he leaves as the Ravens’ head coach. Uncertainty and underperformance have clouded this season for the Ravens, and that theme continued in their loss to the Patriots.
With Lamar Jackson’s status going forward up in the air, Harbaugh had little in the way of answers about what was going to happen with Jackson going forward.
Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk wrote about Harbaugh not being sure of the severity of Jackson’s back injury.
“It’s a bruise of some kind, I think. I don’t know how serious it’ll be,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll have to find out in the next couple of days. He got kneed in the back on the ground there.”
Harbaugh noted that he and the Ravens will have a better understanding of Jackson’s status for the end of the season after he undergoes additional testing.
“I really don’t have a word on it now,” Harbaugh later added. “It’s just early. Haven’t gotten anything definitive from the trainers or doctors yet. I don’t know. Probably [will] know more tomorrow or the next day.”
Harbaugh wanted to make clear that if there was any way for Jackson to continue in the game, he would’ve.
“No, he couldn’t go,” Harbaugh said. “If he could’ve gone, he would’ve gone.”
The Ravens ended their game against the Patriots with three uncertainties: The Playoffs, Lamar Jackson’s health, and John Harbaugh’s future as the Ravens’ head coach.
