The Philadelphia Eagles suffered one of the most surprising losses of the season on Thursday Night Football to kick off Week 6 of the 2025 NFL campaign. Going up against the one-win New York Giants, the Eagles were handed a shocking 34-17 defeat, giving them their second loss in just a matter of days. After the game, star offensive lineman Lane Johnson did not hold back when criticizing the team’s offense.
Despite having virtually the same group of playmakers in town as they did last season when they cruised to victory in Super Bowl LIX, Philadelphia’s offense has looked disjointed through six games. If you ask Johnson, he believes there’s one big issue that may be the cause of the Eagles’ offensive woes to begin the season.
Lane Johnson Calls Out Eagles’ Offense
In 2024, Philadelphia turned itself into a well-oiled machine thanks to its high-powered offense. On the ground, Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts formed a potent duo, with Hurts also having guys like A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert to throw to in the air. When all the pieces of the puzzle fit, the Eagles were nearly unstoppable.
All of these guys are still in town, but the results have not been nearly as good in 2025. The biggest change has come on the sidelines, where Kevin Patullo has replaced Kellen Moore after he accepted the New Orleans Saints head coaching job. Patullo has struggled to get the offense going, and calls for the team to fire him are quickly increasing.
Patullo’s playcalling has been confusing on several occasions. He goes through phases where he almost entirely ignores either the run or pass game, and it makes things too easy for opposing defenses. Johnson believes that the Eagles’ offense has become “predictable,” which could be viewed as a sly shot at Patullo’s playcalling to start the season.
“Maybe we’re too predictable,” Johnson admitted after the game. “When you look at some of the stuff we did last year, the production isn’t matching the talent. Collectively, we’ve got to come together and do better.”
What Changes Should the Eagles Make on Offense?

There are issues all over the place for the Eagles’ offense. A year after a historically productive season, Barkley is averaging just 3.4 yards per carry, which is down from a mind-boggling 5.8 from last season. Brown and Smith are struggling to get on the same page with Hurts, which is due in large part to defenses not being worried about Philly’s rushing attack. As a result, Hurts has been unable to find open receivers in the air.
Getting more creative could be key to getting the offense off the ground. Mixing in some play actions to keep the defense off balance would certainly help, and using Hurts as a runner more could help create some space for Barkley. With a couple of extra days to prepare for Week 7, Philadelphia is going to have to take a hard look at its offense if it wants to snap its recent two-game skid.
