Lionel Messi Makes Major Announcement on Thursday Ahead of World Cup

American soccer fans can get used to seeing Lionel Messi wearing an Inter Miami jersey for the foreseeable future. The MLS announced that Messi has signed a new contract extension with Miami through 2028.

Messi and Inter Miami released a joint video on Instagram announcing the news as well. The legend initially signed a two-and-a-half year deal to move to the MLS in 2023. This could have potentially made Messi a free agent in the future with retirement looming as a more likely option than the star bolting for another club.

“It makes me really happy to stay here and to continue with this project that, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality — playing in this stadium, at Miami Freedom Park,” Messi said in a statement released by Inter Miami on October 23, 2025. “Since I arrived in Miami, I’ve been very happy, so I’m truly glad to keep going here.

“We’re all really excited about the moment when we can finally play at Miami Freedom Park. We can’t wait for it to be finished — to experience it from the inside, in our new home, and for the fans to enjoy it as well. It’s going to be something very special to play at home in such a spectacular stadium.”

Lionel Messi Set to Play in the MLS Beyond the 2026 World Cup

Messi’s status beyond the 2026 World Cup was initially in doubt. The MLS is looking to build upon the potential momentum of the United States hosting the upcoming World Cup.

No move has been bigger for in the league’s history than landing Messi. Now, the MLS has at least an additional two years following the World Cup to capitalize on Messi mania across the country.

Lionel Messi Remains Undecided on Playing in the 2026 World Cup

The latest soccer news means Messi is committed to playing in the MLS well beyond the World Cup, but the star has yet to announce his decision for the tournament. Prior to the contract announcement, Messi noted that he did not plan to make a decision until after the MLS preseason.

“But well, we’re almost there, so I’m excited and motivated to play it,” Messi said of the World Cup during a September press conference, per ESPN’s Lizzy Becherano.“Like I always say, I go day by day, going by how I feel.

“I’m trying to feel good and, above all, being honest with myself. When I feel good, I enjoy it, but when I don’t, honestly, I don’t have a good time, so I prefer not to be there if I don’t feel good. So we’ll see. I haven’t made a decision about the World Cup. I’ll finish the season, then I’ll have preseason, and there will be six months left,” Messi continued.

“So, we’ll see how I feel. Hopefully, I’ll have a good preseason in 2026 and finish this MLS season well, and then I’ll decide.”

Given Messi is now committed to continuing his career, it would be a surprise if the star does not suit up for Argentina in the World Cup. With Miami also hosting World Cup matches, there will be plenty of pressure from both the club and MLS for Messi to play in the 2026 World Cup.
