The Detroit Lions are out of the postseason, and that means Dan Campbell and the team only have one game left for the 2025-26 season, which is Sunday, January 4, against an old foe. Yes, Detroit will take on former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and the Chicago Bears on the road.
The Lions were eliminated from the playoffs on Christmas Day, December 25, after a 23-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at home. Now, when it comes to the NFC North, according to NFL research, both the Lions and Vikings won’t be in the postseason, but the Bears and Green Bay Packers will.
“Losing is very disappointing. Losing. I hate losing,” Campbell said after the team’s Christmas Day loss. “We do. But look, I mean some of these things that come up, the efforts there. It’s just boy, we are not, we’re just a little off here. And it’s costing us significantly. Just there again, too many turnovers. That’s what really got us, man. Just couldn’t overcome it.”
Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears Showdown is Set
Following the Chicago Bears’ loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, December 28, the NFL and the franchises announced that the Lions and Bears game for Week 18 will be played at 4:25 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, and air on Fox.
While the Lions don’t have takes in this game, the Bears have a reason to give it their all. Following their loss to the 49ers on Sunday, the Bears, with their 11-5 record, aren’t able to snag the top seed in the NFC. But, if they beat the Lions, they’ll get the No. 2 seed and host the Packers in the Wild Card round.
“I expect everybody to be ready to go when we get back in, in a couple days,” Campbell said after the team’s loss to the Vikings. “Be locked in and be ready when we get on the plane to go to Chicago. You know, to be locked in one more time. That’s what I expect. And then we’ll go from there.
He added, “You know, Brad and I will have a lot of decisions to make. You know, a lot of things to look at. The what’s, the why’s, the how do we improve, because we need to improve.”
Dan Campbell on the Chicago Bears Meeting
No, Campbell says the Detroit Lions will not be tanking against the Bears because they’re not in the playoffs. Speaking to the media on Monday, December 29, he said that team has a reason to give it their all.
“You can always find a lot out with one to go,” Campbell stated. “And, no, we’re not playing for the playoffs, but there’s still things we can find out, and I expect the guys that we have here to give it what they’ve got one more time. That’s the expectation.”
He did admit that the team is out healthy players going into the Bears game. “The injury report is—we’re pretty riddled right now,” he said. “So, I don’t know. We’ll find more out here in the next day or two. I mean, if they can play, we’re playing.”
