The Minnesota Vikings’ rivalry with the Detroit Lions is alive and well, with quarterback Jared Goff offering fuel for the competitive fire. The Vikings’ loss in that game cost the Vikings the division crown and the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs.
Goff is 7-3 against the Vikings in his career. Moreover, he has led the Lions to five straight victories against his NFC North rival as their starting QB.
He certainly has bragging rights.
Rather than take the high road, Goff stirred the pot when given the opportunity. During an autograph session as part of an appearance for Fanatics, Goff was offered a Vikings cap to sign. He did, but he also crossed out the logo.
“Oh, man,” Goff says to himself in the video, which was originally shared on TikTok but got reposted to X by The Detroit Times on June 17.
“That’s my QB,” one fan posted in the comment section.
“At least he signed it, I’ll give him that lol,” said another fan under the video clip, which was initially shared on June 2.
“Should’ve just signed ‘Daddy,’” said a fan in the replies of the original post.
Vikings, Lions Part of Key Changes in NFC North
GettyMinnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell talks with Jared Goff #16 of the Detroit Lions.
The Vikings have more pressing issues to tend to than Goff and the Lions. The Chicago Bears are on tap for Monday Night Football to open the 2025 regular season. They will not see the Lions until Week 9, with their second meeting in Week 17 on Christmas Day.
The stakes may not be the same this time around, but the Vikings can turn the tide against Goff this season.
Both teams made significant changes this offseason.
The Vikings are turning to 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy after winning 14 games with Sam Darnold, now of the Seattle Seahawks, last season. McCarthy steps into a veteran-laden roster. He has one of the best defenses and collections of skill players in the league.
Goff and the Lions both coordinators to head coaching positions, and starting center Frank Ragnow retired.
Lions Star Praises Vikings
GettyMinnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores takes the field prior to the game against the Green Bay Packers.
On the other side of the coin from Goff about the Vikings is Lions teammate and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. He noted he is 6-2 against his rivals in Minnesota.
Still, the three-time Pro Bowler praised Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores.
“The Vikings, they’re a good team,” St. Brown told Vikings rookie wideout Tai Felton on “The St. Brown Podcast” on June 11. “Coach Flores, your DC, bro? I don’t know what you guys are going to be doing in practice. But in games, bro, he runs the craziest defenses I’ve ever seen in my life.”
The Vikings ranked 28th against the pass during the 2024 regular season. However, they were fifth in scoring, fourth in sacks, and led the league in blitz rate, per Pro Football Reference.
Flores’ aggressive scheme often leaves his corners on an island.
However, the Vikings’ ability to lock up and get teams off the field – they ranked fourth with a 35.6% third-down conversion rate and led the league on fourth downs at 37.1% – is critical to the unit’s success.
The next step for Flores and the Vikings is solving some of their more problematic matchups, such as Goff and the Lions.
