Liverpool and Scotland legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has revealed he is undergoing treatment for cancer.

Dalglish, 75, confirmed the diagnosis on Tuesday after mistakenly posting about his treatment on social media.

In a statement, the legendary former Reds player and manager said: ‘As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

‘Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.

‘Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand.

‘Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.

‘As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves.’

In response to Dalglish’s social media post, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher wrote: ‘Sending all our love Kenny.’

Meanwhile, ex-England and Reds striker Robbie Fowler added: ‘Sending you lots of love Sir king’

Dalglish’s son and former footballer, Paul, said: ‘Love you Dad. You got this.’

In a short statement on their website, Liverpool added: ‘The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will be, with Sir Kenny and his family.

‘The club would also like to underscore his request for privacy moving forward.’

Sir Kenny, who began his career at Celtic, is widely regarded as one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players, having scored 172 goals in his 515 appearances for the Reds.

The forward won six league titles and three European Cups during his illustrious playing career at Anfield before taking charge as manager and guiding the club to three league titles and two FA Cups in the 1980s.

Daglish remains a prominent and visible figure at the club, and was on the pitch during Liverpool’s final game of the season as part of a presentation for departing players Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.

The Scot’s announcement comes just days after Kevin Keegan, the player Dalglish was signed to replace when joining from Celtic in 1977, revealed he was diagnosed with stage four cancer in January.

The former England manager spoke openly about his diagnosis at events last weekend and said he was responding well to treatmen and ‘narly through it’.
