Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has made public his desire to play in Spain one day having been linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer.

The 25-year-old impressed in his debut season at Liverpool following his move from Brighton in June 2023 for a fee potentially rising to around £55 million.

And the Argentinian has gone from strength to strength this campaign under Arne Slot, becoming a key lynchpin in the Dutchman’s midfield three which has rocketed the Reds to the top of the Premier League table.

Only last month, Mac Allister scored his second goal of the season in the Champions League as Liverpool beat Spanish side Real Madrid 2-0 at Anfield.

But the midfielder, whose current contract expires in 2028, has now admitted that he would like to ply his trade in La Liga in the future.

Asked by AS if he sees himself playing in Spain one day, Mac Allister replied: ‘Yes, why not?

‘It’s a country I like a lot and I’ve visited it several times, and, above all, because of the language and the culture, it’s very similar to Argentina. I would definitely like to play in Spain one day.’

However, Mac Allister was keen to stress that he was in no rush to leave Anfield, adding: ‘But right now, I’m very comfortable at Liverpool and I don’t think about what might happen in the future.’

In the summer, reports from Argentina suggested that Real Madrid were considering a move for the midfielder to replace the retiring Toni Kroos.

But speaking at the time, Mac Allister made it clear that he would not push for a move away from Slot’s side.

‘I’m very happy at Liverpool and I think that it shouldn’t give rise to those speculations,’ he told TyC Sports in June.

Mac Allister also revealed that Klopp is keen to see him remain at Liverpool.

‘Klopp told me that I’m in the right club to grow,’ Mac Allister said. ‘When he left, he gave me a hug and said it was a pity to share so little time together. I am happy and very comfortable at Liverpool.’

While Mac Allister looks set to stay for the foreseeable, Liverpool do have a battle on their hands to keep other key players at the club, with the contracts of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all expiring at the end of the season.

Following a very public fallout, the latest reports from the Athletic suggest that the trio have now been offered deals but an agreement with any of the three is not expected quickly.
