Mac Jones Opens Up About Decision to Sign with the San Francisco 49ers

T

he San Francisco 49ers are 6-4 to begin the 2025 season and despite the numerous injuries they have dealt with, they are still very much alive in the NFC playoff race. The 49ers have dealt with injuries are multiple positions, but most notably, have been without starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, for most of the season as he deals with a turf toe injury. But even with their $265 million signal caller out, the 49ers have still found a way to win games– thanks to the performance of backup quarterback, Mac Jones.

Signing Jones to a two-year deal in the offseason after the former first round pick struggled to find success with the New England Patriots or the Jacksonville Jaguars, the 49ers’ expectation was for Jones to be solely a backup while Purdy led the team. But Purdy got hurt in week one, forcing Jones to take over early in the season. And now 5-3 as the starter, with 2,151 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions, it is safe to say that the 49ers not only made a good move by signing him, but that Jones has also revived his career. Now, ten weeks into the season, Jones is opening up about his decision to sign with the 49ers.

Why Jones Came to the 49ers

Struggling as the Patriots’ starting quarterback, Jones was traded to the Jaguars prior to the 2024 season, spending the final year of his rookie deal as the backup to Trevor Lawrence. But after Lawrence went down with a concussion, Jones took over the starter for the final seven games of the season– but struggled to find a rhythm. Then came free agency, where Jones wanted to go somewhere where he could regroup and find his footing while also being around a top notch organization that could help him regain his passion for the game.

“I think, like, it was what was presented to me, and I wanted to get back to having fun playing football, and I think I’ve done that,” Jones said after the 49ers’ week 10 loss. “Today [week 10] wasn’t as fun, obviously, but I still believe that we have the right guys in this locker room, and I wanted to get around a good organization that believes in the players, that has coaches that believe in the players, and players that believe in the players.”

“I feel like we have the right guys,” Jones added. “I’ve just been really fortunate to be here this year, and I want to just try and find ways to win games for us. That’s all I’m here to do, and the future will take care of itself.”

Jones is under contract for another season but given how well he has played, it would not be a surprise to see him generate a strong trade market from quarterback needy teams this offseason.

Jones Future with the 49ers

The 49ers do not have to move Jones this offseason and could very well choose to keep for another year as Purdy’s backup. But the risk with that is that they end up losing Jones for nothing if he signs with another team in free agency when his contract expires. If the 49ers opt to trade him, they could get a big return from a team that is desperately searching for its franchise quarterback while also getting assets that could benefit them as well in the long run.
