Mac Jones Sends Clear Message on His 49ers Future After Loss to Rams

The San Francisco 49ers may have a valuable trade chip this off-season in Mac Jones, even though Jones is content in the process of playing for a high-quality organization.

Jones addressed his potential future with the 49ers after their 42-26 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, in what may have been his final start of the 2025 season Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.

Jones signed a two-year, $7 million contract to back up Brock Purdy in San Francisco. The 49ers were the 15th overall pick of the New England Patriots of the 2021 NFL Draft’s third team in as many seasons, since Jones went from the Pats to the Jacksonville Jaguars to San Francisco this off-season.

Purdy may return from a turf-toe injury to take on the Arizona Cardinals (3-6) on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. But Jones is 5-3 in eight starts with the Niners this year.

Mac Jones Is Trying Not To Stress About The Future

At 27 years old, Jones is still young and has proven himself agile enough to be a starting quarterback for a playoff-caliber team — even though that won’t be San Francisco, unless Purdy sustains a career-altering injury.

Still, Jones said he is concerning himself with helping the Niners win while Purdy is unable to play.

“I really just try to take it day by day,” Jones said. “I’ve never tried to look ahead — it’s hard not to — but I never want to do that. I want to focus on each week.”

Jones has learned under offensive-minded head coach Kyle Shanahan and so far has his best completion percentage (69.6) and has his most single-season touchdowns (13) since throwing 14 for the Patriots in 2022.

Reports indicated Purdy would be ready to go for the Rams game, even though Jones ended up going 33 for 39 for 319 yards and three touchdowns while throwing one interceptions.

“I’ve just been really fortunate to be here this year,” Jones said. “I want to just try and find ways to win games for us, and that’s all I’m here to do and the future will take care of itself.”

Mac Jones Joined The 49ers So He Could ‘Have Fun Playing Football Again’

Jones was named the starter in New England in 2021 and quickly lifted the Patriots to the playoffs in his rookie season.

But he was unseated by Bailey Zappe midseason amid New England’s 4-13 year in 2022, which was Bill Belichick’s final season as coach. Jones was traded to Jacksonville where he went 2-5 in seven starts and had as many interceptions (8) as TDs.

So when asked about why he signed a two-year deal in San Francisco, rather than a show-me, one-year contract that could have yielded him another free-agent deal and starting quarterback role, Jones said he felt comfortable in San Francisco.

“I wanted to get back to having fun playing football, and I think I’ve done that,” Jones said. “I still believe that we have the right guys in this locker room, and I wanted to get around a good organization that believes in the players and has coaches that believe in the players and players that believe in the players. I feel like we have the right guys.”
