Though wins have been tough to come by for the New York Giants, vibes around the team have remained relatively high thanks to the rookie infusion of Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo, as well as the eccentricity of fan-favorite Jameis Winston.
Injuries have played a big role in the Giants dysfunction this season, perhaps none bigger than wide receiver Malik Nabers’ season-ending ACL injury. Even though he hasn’t been on the field, Nabers is still making his displeasure with the team known.
Following a disheartening 27-24 overtime loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Nabers took to X to voice his opinion on the end of the game.
“Sometimes I think they b makin us lose on purpose!” Nabers posted. “Cause it’s no way, bro you throw the ball instead of runnin it to make em burn 2 timeouts?? then you dnt kick the field goal.??? Then they have to go down and score!!! Football common sense!!!! Am I missing something?”
Nabers quickly deleted the post, but not before plenty of people were able to screenshot what he said.
Nabers Voices Opinion On Social Media
The drive Nabers was referring to in his post was a 14 play, 86-yard campaign that took the clock down to just under three minutes remaining in regulation. With a three point lead and a goal-to-go scenario, Giants’ interim head coach Mike Kafka opted to call two pass plays, both of which fell incomplete and stopped the clock and allowing Detroit to conserve it’s timeouts.
Kafka also called for the offense to go for it on fourth down, which was an incomplete pass leading to a turnover on downs. Detroit then drove down the field and kicked a field goal to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Jahmyr Gibbs housed a 69-yard rush on the first play of OT, which stood as the game winner after the Giants were unable to score on the following drive.
If New York had kicked a field goal on fourth down of that goal-to-go scenario, Detroit would have needed to score a touchdown in the final two minutes to win the game. Instead, they were able to take the ball just past the middle of the field to get into field goal range to send the game to OT.
Is It Possible New York Is Trying To Lose?
Nabers claim that the Giants were attempting to lose Sunday’s game was unprofessional, but nonetheless a warranted point to bring up. After the loss, New York is in line to have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Most people understand that an NFL team is never trying to lose a game; at least the players and coaches, who are all playing and coaching for their jobs in trying seasons like this. However, it wouldn’t be shocking if the Giants front office was happy with how this game ended: their team showed fight, players showed they’re still bought in, yet they inched closer to a premium draft pick for next season.
