Old Trafford bosses have made midfield reinforcements their priority concern this summer following Casemiro’s departure at the end of the season.
United were also keen to replace Manuel Ugarte, who is now set to stay at the club following his huge injury setback while at the World Cup with Uruguay.
Manchester United have already agreed a deal with Atalanta worth £35m to sign Brazil international Ederson, who is also currently out in the Unites States for the World Cup.

But Carrick wants at least one more midfielder to arrive through the doors at Old Trafford and has already missed out on Anderson and Fernandes.
Manchester City have won the race to sign England World Cup star Anderson, spending an eye-watering £116m to poach him from Nottingham Forest.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have signed Portuguese midfielder Fernandes from West Ham in a stunning deal worth £85m.
According to The Guardian, Manchester United have now turned their attentions to Chelsea star Santos.
The Brazilian has only made 47 appearances for Chelsea since moving to Stamford Bridge in 2023 and been sent out on loan twice.
Santos, 22, has shown glimpses of his immense potential but is behind Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in the pecking order at Chelsea.
As a result it is claimed he ‘open’ to leaving Stamford Bridge this summer for more regular minutes, with Chelsea’s asking price standing at £50m.
