Manchester United are considering a shock move for Nottingham Forest defender Neco Williams, but they are not the only Premier League club in the race for his signature.

The 25-year-old has been at the City Ground since July 2022 when he moved from Liverpool in a £17m deal.

It proved to be a shrewd piece of business from the then-newly-promoted side as he has played a key part in the four seasons since.

The 55-cap Wales international has made 158 appearances for Forest, including 51 this season, by far the busiest campaign of his career to date.

Williams has been with the club under Steve Cooper, Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou, Sean Dyche and now Vitor Periera and has been involved regularly throughout.

His performances have been such that other Premier League clubs have taken notice and could come calling this summer.

The BBC report that Manchester United, Aston Villa, Newcastle and Everton are all interested in his signature and have made ‘discreet enquiries’ about his availability this summer.

The Welshman only signed a new contract last year, which runs until 2029, so Nottingham Forest are under no pressure to sell.

However, they are looking to fend off interest by offering the full-back another new extension to his deal.

It is likely to be another summer of significant interest in Nottingham Forest from big beasts of the Premier League, with Elliot Anderson and Morgan Gibbs-White also expected to be targeted.

Manchester United are also keen on Anderson as they look set to sign at least one central midfielder this summer.

Former Red Devils defender Rio Ferdinand feels the England international should now be at the top of United’s list of midfield targets.

‘Elliot Anderson, he seems to have jumped to the front of the queue. I think he’s a wonderful player,’ he said on Rio Presents last month.

‘I think Elliot Anderson is the right type not only of player but character, I thin he’d be a good addition to the squad.

‘Tonali is a big talent that everyone is talking about, Guimaraes is another big talent that everyone is talking about, but I just think the type of midfielder United need is somebody who is a bit more all-action, who can cover ground, who is dynamic, who is robust, strong, who can drive a team.

‘Right now Anderson seems to be ticking those boxes.’

Manchester City have also been strongly linked with a move for the 23-year-old who would likely cost interested parties at least £80m.

The Red Devils have also been linked with Gibbs-White, who was a target for Tottenham last summer and Spurs could reignite their interest again this year.
