Manchester United have contacted West Ham to discuss a surprise move for Netherlands winger Crysencio Summerville, according to reports.

Summerville, 24, is expected to leave West Ham this summer following the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League.

The Dutch forward was one of West Ham’s more influential players last season but was unable to prevent the east London club from dropping down into the Championship.

Summerville has attracted interest from several domestic and foreign clubs and The Athletic say Manchester United are weighing up a surprise move.

While another winger is not United’s priority, they are open to bolstering Michael Carrick’s squad in that area and have ‘enquired’ about Summerville.

Marcus Rashford is set to return to Old Trafford following his loan spell at Barcelona but does not appear to have a future at boyhood club United.

As a result the Red Devils have contacted West Ham to discuss Summerville’s situation and been told he would cost around £50m.

While West Ham are open to cashing in on the Dutchman, they are in a fairly strong negotiating position as he still has three years left on his contract.

Earlier this week, Hammers shareholder Daniel Kretinsky insisted the club were under no pressure to sell players for ‘financial reasons’ this summer.

England’s Jarrod Bowen and Portugal’s Mateus Fernandes have also been linked with moves away from east London, with Manchester United keen on the latter.

‘We have a very credible strategy,’ Kretinsky, who is set to become West Ham’s largest shareholder and also owns the Daily Mail, told The Times.

‘We don’t need to sell the players for financial reasons.  We are doing this to make sure we are promoted back to the Premier League immediately.  That is our only goal.

‘Key players are waiting for us. They want to see there is a real chance of keeping the squad together. What matters is funding, strategy and consistency.

‘We have spoken to all of them. They need to see that our project is real and serious. Promotion is our only goal.’

Rashford was hoping to earn a permanent move to Barcelona but the La Liga champions have reportedly sent him back to Manchester United.

Interest in Summerville only looks set to increase as he looks to help Netherlands enjoy a deep run at the World Cup, having scored a superb goal in their opening match against Japan.

Ronald Koeman’s side face Sweden next on Saturday before taking on Tunisia in their final game in Group F.
