Man Utd target forced off in tears after horror injury just 30 minutes into Copa America opener

MANCHESTER UNITED target Edson Alvarez was forced off in tears during Mexico’s Copa America opener.

The midfielder pulled up with an apparent hamstring injury just 30 minutes into the match against Jamaica on Saturday night.

Alvarez was seen covering his face after going down holding his upper leg.

The West Ham star received treatment on the pitch before being helped off by medical staff.

His injury is a major blow for El Tri, with Alvarez captaining the side at the tournament.

After the match, manager Jaime Lozano explained: “We’re going to wait a couple of days to do some testing on him and to know well what he’s got going on.

“He’s extremely important. He’s a leader, he understands the game well. He’s important on the pitch and in the locker room as well.

“You listen to him talk, he has a way with words and when he speaks you listen. This was a tough blow for all of us.”

Mexico face Venezuela in their next match on Wednesday night before concluding their group campaign against Ecuador on June 30.

Despite Alvarez’s injury, El Tri went on to beat Jamaica 1-0 thanks to Gerardo Arteaga’s second half strike.

Alvarez joined West Ham from Ajax last summer, signing a five-year deal through to 2028 with the Hammers.

The 26-year-old went on to make 42 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice from midfield.

His performances have seen the Mexico skipper emerge as a target for United in recent days.

The Red Devils are reportedly considering a move for Alvarez to replace Casemiro if he leaves the club.

Erik ten Hag previously worked with Alvarez during three years together at Ajax.
