Manchester United host Athletic Bilbao this week hoping to finish the job at Old Trafford and book their place in the Europa League final.

Ruben Amorim’s side produced a thrilling performance away in the Basque Country last Thursday to take full control of the semi-final tie at its halfway stage.

Casemiro’s header gave the visitors the perfect start with Bruno Fernandes scoring twice after Athletic were reduced to 10 men.

United have been trying to rid themselves of a nasty habit of dropping leads and their record at home this season has been woeful at times – losing eight times in front of their own fans.

None of those defeats have come in the Europa League however and with a three-goal lead in place, they have reason to be confident.

Amorim made sweeping changes to his side for Sunday’s Premier League defeat to Brentford with youngsters Tyler Fredricson, Harry Amass and Chido Obi starting.

Fernandes, Casemiro, Noussair Mazraoui, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund were rested but there was one fresh casualty with Matthijs de Ligt forced off in the first-half.

The Netherlands international had only just made his return after a six-game layoff in last week’s first leg and is now a major doubt for Thursday night.

Diogo Dalot also remains out with Mazraoui doing a fine job filling in before being rested at Brentford.

But Amad Diallo will be pushing for a return to the starting XI, possibly at wing-back, after coming off the bench in the last two games having recovered from his ankle injury.

How United could line up this week.

Despite Amorim’s talk of resting players, Alejandro Garnacho has remained a fixture in the team, playing the full 90 against Bournemouth and Brentford either side of the first leg, coming off after 84 minutes in Bilbao.

Mason Mount was the man given a rest on Sunday, replaced just before the hour mark and could be in contention to start ahead of the Argentine.
