Maple Leafs Add Marner Replacement in New Trade Pitch

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a clear need for another top-six winger who can add some offense to the lineup.

Heavy.com has a trade idea that would see the Maple Leafs acquire Teuvo Teravainen from the Chicago Blackhawks to help replace Mitch Marner.

The proposed deal would be an intriguing one as Toronto would acquire a top-six forward for their top defensive prospect and two NHL players who don’t have a clear-cut role on the team.

The Maple Leafs would acquire Teravainen, who’s entering the second year of his three-year, $16.2 million deal. Teravainen would be the Maple Leafs’ second-line left winger, which is a major need and would add some more offense to the lineup. He recorded 15 goals and 43 assists for 58 points in 82 games. He would likely get to 20-25 goals and 60-70 points with the Maple Leafs.

A big part of the return would be Danford, who is the Maple Leafs’ top defensive prospect. Danford was selected 31st overall in 2024 and is likely a couple of years away from making the NHL.

The Blackhawks would also acquire Jarnkrok, who would be a middle-six forward in Chicago. Jarnkrok is entering the final year of his four-year, $8.4 million deal. He dealt with injuries last season as he recorded just 1 goal and 6 assists for 7 points in 19 games.

The other player the Maple Leafs would give up is Robertson. Robertson signed a one-year, $1.825 million deal to avoid arbitration, but doesn’t have a clear path to playing time and could be moved. He would get a top-six role in Chicago and help replace Teravainen’s offense.

How Would Teravainen Fit Into the Maple Leafs?

If Toronto trades for Teravainen, he would be a top-six winger for the Maple Leafs, which is a need.

Toronto saw Mitch Marner leave this offseason, and the Maple Leafs haven’t truly replaced him yet. Although Teravainen isn’t as good as Marner, he is still a good second-line left winger and would add some more offense to the lineup.

Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving says adding a top-six winger is needed.

“Mitch was a top-six forward, and we haven’t replaced that hole,” Treliving said on July 1. “That’s really where our focus is.”

If the Maple Leafs add Teravainen, he would be Toronto’s second-line left winger, which is a big need. Currently, Bobby McMann projects to be the second-line left winger, but he struggled last season, so he should look to improve on that.

Teravainen could also be part of Toronto’s second power play unit, which could also use an upgrade.

Maple Leafs Looking to Trade 3 Forwards

Toronto has an excess of bottom-six forwards and could look to trade some.

NHL insider Chris Johnston of The Athletic believes Toronto could look to trade David Kampf, Jarnkrok, or Robertson, or potentially all of them.

“With that glut of NHL-caliber players, the Leafs could still ship out one or more of David Kämpf, Calle Järnkrok or Robertson before the season begins,” Johnston wrote.

But, Johnston says Toronto are reluctant to move Robertson due to his age. But in the right deal, perhaps the deal will happen.
