Maple Leafs Linked to Reunion With Former $25M Goalie

The Toronto Maple Leafs could look to bring back a familiar name to be the team’s third goalie and add some veteran insurance.

The Maple Leafs have had a veteran goalie in the AHL as their third goalie over the past couple of years, from Martin Jones to Matt Murray. However, Toronto hasn’t added a veteran goalie this offseason, but The Hockey Writers link the Maple Leafs to a reunion with Jack Campbell.

“So, why would Toronto even consider a reunion? Depth and experience. Behind Stolarz and Woll, the organization could use another proven veteran in the system—someone who could provide mentorship while also serving as an emergency call-up if needed,” the article read. “It would be very much like the role Matt Murray served last season.

“An AHL deal with the Toronto Marlies could be the perfect low-risk arrangement. Campbell would have a chance to find his game in a familiar setting, and the Maple Leafs would avoid any heavy financial or contractual commitment,” the article added. “If he managed to return to form, he’d be a ready-made insurance policy for the NHL roster. This kind of move is precisely the type of calculated gamble that savvy front offices make—adding depth without compromising flexibility.”

Campbell was the Maple Leafs’ goalie from 2020 until 2022, as he was the team’s starting goalie. He had so much success in Toronto, he parlayed that into a five-year, $25 million deal with the Edmonton Oilers. However, Campbell struggled and ended up being bought out after just two seasons.

Maple Leafs Urged to Give Campbell a 2nd Chance

Campbell did struggle at times, but he would be a veteran third goalie, which could be needed.

The Maple Leafs’ goalies are Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll, but both have injury issues. With that, the outlet believes Campbell would be worth a second chance in Toronto to serve as depth.

“Still, there’s a strong case for why this could be a success. Campbell is already familiar with the city, the organization, and the demands that come with playing here,” the article read. “That familiarity could help him settle in faster than in a completely new market. It might be an easier fit than some other places. Even bringing him in on a professional tryout (PTO) might generate some buzz.

“An AHL deal would create a clear “prove-it” scenario: no promises, just an opportunity. Fans have always had a soft spot for him. And a redemption story in the place where he became an All-Star would be a compelling chapter in both his career and Maple Leafs history. Sometimes, the comfort of a familiar environment—and the confidence that comes with it—can spark a player’s revival,” the article added.

Campbell was an All-Star in Toronto. But, if it doesn’t pan out, it’s a low-risk move.

What Goalie Depth do the Maple Leafs Have?

Toronto’s top two goalies in the NHL are set with Stolarz and Woll back as one of the best tandems in the NHL. However, after that, there are some question marks for the Maple Leafs.

The Maple Leafs have Dennis Hildeby and Artur Akhtyamov in the AHL, although Hildeby isn’t signed yet.

Hildeby was called up to the NHL. But he had some struggles, as Akhtyamov does have hype as a potential future NHL goalie.

Behind them is Vyacheslav Peksa, who’s likely to be in the ECHL. However, all three are 23 or younger, so perhaps Toronto would want a veteran option.
