The Seattle Mariners were narrowly close to making the franchise’s first World Series. Seattle was rewarded after being aggressive at the MLB trade deadline, and all eyes are on the Mariners front office as free agency heats up.
The Mariners already face decisions about their own key free agents with Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez among those hitting the market. Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez could have used a little more help from the team’s surrounding bats in the postseason.
Naylor was one of the few consistent hitters, but his future with the club remains uncertain despite the Mariners desire to re-sign the slugger. Seattle could be an interesting landing spot for a 2-time Home Run Derby champ.
The Mariners are the favorites to land New York Mets star Pete Alonso at +300 in the betting odds, per BetOnline. Additionally, the Boston Red Sox (+350) and Philadelphia Phillies (+450) are among the favorites as well.
Let’s dive into Alonso’s potential fit with the Mariners.
MLB Rumors: The Mets Expected to Let Pete Alonso Leave in Free Agency
The Mets may be willing to let Alonso walk in MLB free agency. Sports Illustrated’s Pat Ragazzo reported that the Mets are expected to let Alonso leave in free agency, unless the star is willing to sign a team-friendly deal.
“According to a rival NL scout, the Mets recognize that their clubhouse is in need of a culture shift following last season’s slow collapse,” Ragazzo wrote in a November 8, 2025, story titled, “What i’m hearing about the Mets’ offseason plans.”
“The expectation is that the Mets will float utility man Jeff McNeil on the trade market and let franchise cornerstone first baseman Pete Alonso walk in free agency unless he takes a team friendly deal.”
Mets Star Pete Alonso’s Projected Market Value in MLB Free Agency Is a 5-Year, $147 Million Contract
Alonso would join the Mariners with an extensive resume. The slugger is a 5-Time All-Star, earning the honor in the last four seasons.
The star hit a career high .272 while adding 170 hits, 126 RBI and 38 home runs in 2025. Alonso was on a two-year, $54 million contract but exercised his player option to test the free agent waters. The veteran’s projected market value is a five-year, $147 million contract, per Spotrac.
Will the Mariners Push to Make a Big Splash in MLB Free Agency, Aside From Josh Naylor?
It remains to be seen how aggressive the Mariners will be in free agency, especially if the team re-signs Naylor. During an interview with MLB Network Radio, Mariners general manager Justin Hollander indicated that re-signing Naylor would be the team’s top priority in free agency.
“For whatever reason, he’s just always seen the ball well at T-Mobile (Park) and sort of instantly took off from the moment we acquired him,” Hollander said of Naylor, per Seattle Sports. “And it was a great fit and it is definitely a priority for us this offseason. If (Naylor isn’t the Mariners’ No. 1 priority), I don’t know what else would be. He’s No. 1 right now.
“There’s no advantage to hiding the ball, to telling people that. … It was awesome. It was a great fit for the two months, and we’d like to make it last a lot longer. He fits in our clubhouse. Positionally, he fills a position of need. It’s a real left-handed bat that plays an excellent first base, that runs the bases well. He does a lot of things well.”
If the Mariners hope to make a push to win the club’s first World Series, the front office likely needs to do a bit more than simply bringing back the team’s current roster. A move for Alonso is expected to be expensive, but there is a price to being a contender.
