Newsflash: Anthony Davis is hurt again. After missing nearly the entire month of November, the Dallas Mavericks star appeared in just six games, the last of which was a win over the Brooklyn Nets last Saturday, before finding himself on the injury list again.
The Mavericks (10-16) have announced that Davis is questionable for Monday’s game against the Utah Jazz with a left calf contusion. Concerningly, it’s the same calf that he strained in October, which caused him to miss 14 games.
“Dallas Mavericks big man Anthony Davis is questionable for tomorrow night’s game against the Utah Jazz with a left calf contusion,” Noah Weber reported on X. “This is the same calf that he strained back in October. He missed 14 games due to this injury.”
Anthony Davis Trade Rumors
The news comes amid widespread buzz that the Mavericks could shop the 2020 NBA Champion ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline.
Per The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the Mavericks “have signaled a willingness to listen to any and all offers” that might help them build around prized rookie Cooper Flagg. The report backed ESPN’s Shams Charania’s reporting that teams such as the Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks and Toronto Raptors are expected to pursue Davis. However, Amick highlighted that Davis’ injury history — the big man has missed 0ver 100 games in his last three seasons — have given teams cause to pause on pursuing him.
“Yet as several league sources indicated, the actual level of interest from teams remains to be seen. Especially given Davis’ sordid health history,” Amick wrote.
Mavericks in Crisis Mode?
When ex-Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison paired Anthony Davis with Kyrie Irving, the expectation was that Dallas would emerge as a legitimate title contender, especially given their roster depth. That optimism only heightened when the Mavericks landed the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, landing the talented Cooper Flagg.
Alas, the Mavericks’ first full season with Davis, Flagg and Irving has gone from bad to worse in a hurry. While Irving remains questionable to return from an ACL injury this season, Davis’ recurring calf issues don’t bode well for the team’s playoff chances.
Amick reported last week that the Mavericks, internally, had not ruled out the idea of retaining their veterans rather than building completely around Flagg. One wonders if those plans are once again in jeopardy.
“As one league source shared, there are even some indications that the Mavericks are still considering upgrading this current core rather than parting with their veterans,” Amick wrote. “Time will tell if there’s anything feasible on that front, or if this becomes the fire sale that so many have predicted.”
Given the sensitive nature of calf injuries — especially in the modern NBA — it shouldn’t come as a shock if the Mavericks shelve Davis for an extended period.
