The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the biggest disappointments so far in the 2025-26 campaign, as they have crawled out to a 2-7 record through their first nine games. Injuries certainly haven’t helped, but the front office’s inability to properly address this roster’s biggest needs over the offseason is already coming back to bite the team.
With Kyrie Irving still recovering from a torn ACL, Anthony Davis was expected to lead the team forward this season. The problem is that Davis has been one of the team’s players who has been bitten by the injury bug, and ahead of their upcoming contest against the Washington Wizards, a major announcement was made regarding the superstar big man’s injury status.
Anthony Davis Ruled Out for Mavericks’ Clash vs. Wizards
Davis was the main piece coming back to Dallas in the wildly controversial Luka Doncic trade with the Los Angeles Lakers from last season. Even with Irving and the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, Cooper Flagg, on the roster, Davis is still easily the best player at the Mavericks’ disposal. Without him, the team’s play on the court takes a major step backwards.
That is obviously a pretty big issue, because Davis has missed time with a calf strain as of late. While he managed to suit up for the first five games of the season, averaging 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 52% from the floor, it’s worth noting that injuries have always been a big issue for Davis.
Ahead of the team’s upcoming contest against the Wizards, Davis was upgraded to questionable by the team, indicating that he had a shot to make his return to action for the Mavs. With tip-off quickly approaching, though, head coach Jason Kidd revealed that Davis still isn’t 100% ready to play, which is why the team ruled him out for his fifth-straight game.
“Anthony Davis is out tonight for the fifth straight game, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd just announced,” Marc Stein shared in a post on X.

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the Mavericks have lost each of their four games without Davis on the floor. Simply put, when he isn’t playing, the team struggles to create any sort of offense. Beyond that, he’s the team’s best interior defender, and it certainly hasn’t helped that both Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford are also banged up, as well.
Winning without Davis will be tough, but Dallas has a favorable matchup against Washington on its hands. The Wizards are one of the few teams that have somehow been worse than the Mavs this season, as they have a 1-8 record through their first nine games. Tip-off for this contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on Saturday night, and if the Mavericks are unable to win this game, even without Davis, things could quickly begin to spiral out of control for this team.
