The Nico Harrison era has come to an end in Dallas.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Tuesday morning that the Dallas Mavericks are parting ways with their general manager of four years.
The man who orchestrated the Luka Doncic trade with the Los Angeles Lakers is gone, to the delight of all Mavs fans.
Now is the time for a cleanup, to walk back the mistakes Harrison made over the last year of his time as the lead decision maker in Dallas.
Mavericks Trade Idea Cuts Ties With Anthony Davis
What better place to start than trading the player Harrison made the Doncic deal around?
In a trade proposal from Arhaan Raje of Sportskeeda, the Dallas Mavericks would trade Anthony Davis to the Orlando Magic.
Orlando Magic receive: Anthony Davis
Dallas Mavericks receive: Franz Wagner, Jonathan Isaac, 2027 first-round pick
“Nine months after the infamous swap between a 26-year-old Doncic and a 32-year-old aging star in Davis, the move hasn’t yielded the desired results,” wrote Raje.
“The Mavericks get a younger star to pair with Cooper Flagg in 24-year-old Franz Wagner, along with a solid defender in Jonathan Isaac and a 2027 first.”
Harrison said after the blockbuster Doncic deal, “time will tell if I’m right.”
Well, Nico, time is telling.
Since being acquired by the Mavericks, Davis has played in 14 of 46 possible games in Dallas, once again reminding folks that the logic behind the trade was flawed.
In this trade proposal, Dallas gets younger around their No. 1 overall pick, giving the starting lineup some more spacing with the addition of Franz Wagner, who is shooting 37% from three-point range this season.
Jonathan Isaac isn’t just a throw-in; he’s shown the ability to be an elite defensive specialist throughout his time in Orlando, but durability issues have kept him from reaching his full potential.
Not to mention the addition of another first-round pick, which sets the Mavs up better than they could’ve hoped for from the fallout of the Doncic trade.
Would the Magic Accept the Deal?
For the Orlando Magic, trading for Davis would give them something they haven’t had since the days of Dwight Howard.
An elite two-way threat at center, capable of taking over games.
Now, Davis, of course, has to stay healthy in order for the trade to work out. But for an Orlando team clearly all-in, this is about as big a swing for the fences you can find.
“The Magic have been one of the biggest letdowns three weeks into the 2025-26 NBA season. They are 5-6 after barely escaping past the Trail Blazers with a Desmond Bane game-winner on Monday,” continued Raje.
“If the trend continues, the Magic might consider making another big swing in the trade market after spending four firsts on Bane. While Davis hasn’t been at his best, his talent and playoff pedigree are undeniable and could elevate the Magic in a weak Eastern Conference.”
A trio of Paolo Banchero, Desmond Bane, and Davis may be enough for a deep playoff run in a not-as-talented East.
If Orlando is feeling the pressure to go all-in on a championship run this season, this trade would provide them with a boom-or-bust shot at the NBA Finals.
