With the Las Vegas Raiders falling to 2-5 ahead of the NFL trade deadline, there have been rumors that defensive end Maxx Crosby could be traded. The Dallas Cowboys are the team that’s been talked about most, but if Crosby is actually available, many teams would be interested.
Unfortunately for those teams, he is not. The Raiders have come out and said they aren’t going to trade him. Plus, it looks like Crosby himself doesn’t want a deal.
According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, Crosby wants to stay put for now.
“So the Raiders told them, they’re not moving him, but also Maxx Crosby said, ‘I don’t want to go anywhere,’” Glazer said on “Fox NFL Sunday.” “There was one team that called me and said, ‘Hey, could you find out?’ I said, ‘Nope, he doesn’t want to go,’ and a team said, ‘Man, we love him because of his loyalty. Wish he wasn’t, though.’”
If the Raiders don’t want to trade Crosby and he doesn’t want to get moved, that should end the trade talk around him. There will likely continue to be rumors, but it looks like a certainty that Crosby will still be on the Raiders’ roster at the end of the season.
Mark Davis Talks Crosby Trade
Crosby has become the face of the Raiders in recent years. Without a star quarterback on the roster, he’s the player who galvanizes the fan base.
Not only is he an excellent player on the field, but he’s also embraced the Raiders fully and represents them well off the field. Owner Mark Davis has had to address Crosby trade rumors in the past and is reiterating that he’s not going to sign off on a trade.
“I don’t know how many times I’ve got to say it,” Davis told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo recently. “It’s really hard to keep getting asked the same question every month or week or whatever when the answer’s going to stay the same. I don’t know why anybody would think I’d change my mind or the organization would.”
Davis isn’t surprised that teams are going after the star defensive end.
“Everybody wants to have your great players,” Davis said. “It starts there, it doesn’t start with us.”
Are Raiders Making Right Decision?
The Raiders are struggling right now, and it’s difficult to see how they’ll be able to turn this around by next season. Many believe that the best course of action is to trade players like Crosby away and stock up on draft picks.
If this were a normal rebuild, that could make some sense, but the Raiders have a 74-year-old head coach in Pete Carroll. He’s not going to embrace a rebuild that takes two or three years. The Raiders have a lot of new pieces, and it’s possible that they are able to get back to winning games after the bye week.
While a 7-10 or 8-9 finish to the season hurts their draft slot, it does give them some more momentum heading into the offseason.
