After Sunday’s matchup between the Las Vegas Raiders and Chicago Bears, both teams walked away with mutual respect, especially between two standout players: Bears quarterback Caleb Williams and Raiders pass rusher Maxx Crosby.
Amidst Chicago’s victory, Williams showed tremendous poise and growth, going up against one of the NFL’s most relentless defenders. Following the game, Williams gave Crosby the highest praise possible for an opponent so early in his career.
“They’ve got a helluva player over there,” Williams said after the game. “He’s probably the best player that I’ve ever played against so far in my career.”
Maxx Crosby Praises Caleb Williams After Intense Matchup
Crosby followed up with his own praise for the young quarterback, saying, “Hearing that from a really good player is cool. Our matchup was all day. I mean all day we’re going back and forth, and he’s a competitor bro, I’ll give it to him. He didn’t back down, he kept getting back up and kept trying to make plays. He definitely earned my respect. He’s a competitor and he’s hard to tackle. He makes plays happen.”
That mutual respect speaks volumes. For a player of Crosby’s caliber to praise a young quarterback like Williams is no small thing.
There’s no denying the fact that it was challenging for the Bears‘ offense to do anything with Crosby lined up on the other side. He not only dominated the trenches but also recorded the first interception of his NFL career by batting a pass from Williams and snagging it.
Williams Trending Upwards
For Williams, the experience was another step in his development. He acknowledged the need to get the ball out quicker and find his rhythm earlier in games, especially against elite pass rushers like Crosby.
“Understanding that coming into the game, I tried to get the ball out as fast as possible and get it to my guys,” Williams said. “I think I can do a better job of that early in the game, getting everybody in rhythm. …I’m proud of the guys, especially in the way we fought. That’s all you can ask for at the end of the day.”
The game against the Raiders was another sign that Williams is trending in the right direction. Facing a top-tier pass rusher like Crosby will only accelerate his growth.
Even with the rocky start with multiple play callers and offensive line woes during his rookie season, Williams is becoming more confident slinging the ball in the pocket and has continued to display flashes of elite talent that made him the No. 1 overall pick. It seems to all start coming together for No. 18.
Williams’ humility and competitiveness stood out just as much as his play. If he continues to grow from each matchup like this one, the Bears‘ future is bright.
