Mets Linked to Yankees’ 34 Home Run Slugger Amid Free Agency Decision

After a disappointing end to both New York MLB teams this season, both have major decisions to make during the winter months. All eyes are on re-signing Pete Alonso for the New York Mets, but if they cannot agree on an extension, that will be a lot of production to replace. Luckily for Mets fans, owner Steve Cohen has been adamant about being one of the top spenders in baseball to field a playoff team.

And for the New York Yankees, there might be even more questions with their current roster construction than the Mets. The Yankees will have several key front office decisions about players like Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham, Devin Williams, Paul Goldschmidt, and more.

Should the Mets make Trent Grisham a contract offer?

Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham is one of those key decisions the front office must make. Coming off a career year offensively, Grisham is now set to test the free agent market. In 143 games this season, Grisham hit 34 home runs with an OPS+ of 125. Once known purely for his defense, Grisham flipped that narrative this season by being one of the Yankees‘ premier power bats.

In a recent Bleacher Report article, writer Kerry Miller speculates that the Mets could be a good fit for Trent Grisham:

“Projected 2026 Outfield: LF Brandon Nimmo, CF Jeff McNeil, RF Juan Soto”

“Center field was, not surprisingly, a real adventure for the Mets in 2025. The Jose Siri/Tyrone Taylor platoon never struck fear into the hearts of anyone, and Cedric Mullins was slumping something awful for most of his first four months in Baltimore before playing just as poorly in New York.”

It would be a spectacle if the Yankees lose another star player to the Mets, as they did last season with Juan Soto, but as Miller outlines, aside from Soto and Brandon Nimmo, center field was a bit of an issue for the Mets this season, which Grisham could immediately fix.

What would losing Trent Grisham mean for the Yankees?

If the Yankees were to lose Trent Grisham, they would have to find some sort of replacement in the alternate market. This could be either via free agency or trading for another outfielder with power prowess that could slot in center field.

The team from the Bronx also has to worry about re-signing Cody Bellinger. Will they be able to retain both? Likely not. Trent Grisham signed a one-year, $5 million deal before the 2025 season and was a complete steal of a signing.

Grisham isn’t a great average hitter in MLB, but his .235 batting average was the highest in his career since 2021 with the San Diego Padres. His 34 home runs doubled his previous career-high of 17 back in 2022. Maybe Grisham benefited from the short porch at Yankee Stadium, but it was clear he made some much-needed adjustments to his swing.

If the Mets want to make the playoffs in 2026, they will need to make a couple of big splashes in free agency, and the Trent Grisham sweepstakes is something to keep an eye on if you’re a supporter of the team from Queens.
