Mets Predicted to Land Star Pitcher to 4-Year Deal

The New York Mets already signed star reliever Devin Williams this offseason, and it appears the team isn’t done.

Despite signing Williams to bolster their bullpen, the Mets could still look to add another impact reliever and starter. With that, MLB insider Erik Beaston of Bleacher Report predicts the Mets will bring back star closer Edwin Diaz on a four-year deal.

“A one-two punch of Williams and Díaz would certainly provide the Mets with one of the best reliever situations in the game. especially if the former can rediscover his level of play from his days in Milwaukee, where current Mets and former Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns watched him become one of the best closers in the game,” Beaston wrote.

“The question is whether New York and Díaz can find middle ground on contract length, as the latter has made it clear that he is looking for five years and the team is looking for something more in the range of three.”

A backend of the bullpen featuring Diaz and Williams would instantly make the Mets’ bullpen one of the best in the league.

Diaz is a three-time Reliever of the Year.

Mets Not Ruling Out Bringing Back Diaz

New York made a splash to sign Williams, and many thought that ruled out the team bringing back Diaz.

However, MLB insider Will Sammon of The Athletic reported on Tuesday that the Mets are keeping the door open on re-signing Diaz.

“Williams chose the Mets on Monday night, not knowing whether he would be used as an ace setup option ahead of Edwin Díaz or as a closer replacing Díaz,” Sammon wrote. “According to a person close to Williams, the decorated right-hander is open to pitching in whatever role the team needs him for and wants to win a World Series in New York. Each year, many free agents say something similar.

“The context surrounding Williams’ decision, however, makes it more believable. Such a viewpoint holds significance for the Mets. They remain open to a reunion with Díaz. Formerly their star closer and the best reliever available in free agency, league sources said.”

Williams now serves as insurance should Diaz walk in free agency. But the Mets are more than fine bringing him back and having a dynamic one-two punch.

Diaz went 6-3 with a 1.63 ERA last season, including being 28-of-31 in save opportunities.

How Much Money Will Diaz Get in Free Agency?

Diaz is the top reliever available in free agency, and several teams will be interested in him.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel ranks Diaz as the 14th-ranked free agent and predicts he will sign a four-year, $60 million deal.

“Diaz opted out of the remaining two years and $38 million on his deal with the Mets. He looks poised to add one or two more years at a similar rate,” McDaniel wrote. “His underlying numbers and peripherals have been consistent over his past two seasons. Matching those of an elite reliever with a mid-2s ERA. But his ERAs have fluctuated, with an ERA of 3.52 in 2024 (driven by a spike in home run rate) but then 1.63 in 2025, despite similar components of his performance both years. This is likely a three- or four-year deal that should eclipse $50 million in total.”

Diaz is a three-time MLB All-Star.
