Mets Receive Bold Prediction About Star Pete Alonso

The New York Mets had a disappointing season in 2025 after not making the playoffs. Almost immediately after they were eliminated from playoff contention on the last day of the MLB regular season, star first baseman Pete Alonso announced he would be opting out of his current deal and testing free agency.

Alonso is a complete fan favorite in New York, and with his production over the last four seasons, it’s no surprise why, but his opting out puts pressure on the Mets‘ owner Steve Cohen to open up the checkbook and re-sign the “Polar Bear”.

It was also recently announced that Alonso is eyeing a seven-year deal, but that might be too long for an organization to commit to the soon-to-be 31-year-old.

Pete Alonso Predicted to Sign With Red Sox

The idea of Alonso leaving the New York Mets is something Mets fans don’t want to accept or think about, but it could be the reality. It was always expected that Alonso would search out a new deal, but there is some speculation that he may be growing frustrated with the team’s lackluster season and collapse at the end.

Bleacher Report writer Zack Buckley recently speculated that Alonso could be in new threads in 2026 with the Boston Red Sox:

“Prediction: Alonso signs a five-year, $115 million contract with the Boston Red Sox.”

Five years wouldn’t be the ideal contract length for Alonso, but it might be the most realistic option for an MLB organization to commit to him.

The $23 million AAV of the predicted contract feels about right, as Alonso has solidified himself as one of the best first basemen in the sport.

“With his 30th birthday behind him, it’s possible that a lengthy contract wouldn’t age well, although he’s shown no decline as of yet. He’s had at least 34 home runs in each of the past five seasons, averaging 111.4 RBI and 89.2 runs over this stretch.”

How Does Pete Alonso Fit in With the Red Sox?

The Red Sox seem like one of the best potential fits for Alonso, considering their biggest hole is at first base, and they will be looking to address that problem in a big way this offseason.

Alonso has made four straight All-Star appearances dating back to 2022. He smashed 38 home runs this season, drove in 126 runs, and posted an OPS+ of 144. In his seven years with the Mets, he’s yet to record an OPS+ of less than 120. He also led the National League in doubles with 41 in 2025.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Red Sox give Pete Alonso an offer like Buckley indicated, but it then becomes a case of whether or not Alonso will receive a better offer from another MLB team. The contract prediction is very similar to Freddie Freeman, who signed a six-year extension in his thirties.

Either way, the Alonso sweepstakes will be one of the biggest storylines in the MLB offseason. If the Mets lose him in free agency, that is a big load of production they will attempt to replace.
